The Role
We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Blocks team in Toronto. In this role, you will own the architecture and implementation of the core systems that power Pigment's modeling engine. You will translate complex market dynamics into robust, scalable production systems. Your responsibilities will span the entire lifecycle, from intake validation and design through to deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization. You will work in a small, highly effective squad of five, collaborating closely with product managers and cross-functional partners to deliver high-impact features.
This position is ideal for an engineer who is passionate about solving difficult technical problems and building foundational technology. Your work will directly enable our customers' strategic decisions and internal team efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Architecture and Development: Design and build the backend components that form the foundation of Pigment's modeling capabilities. You will be responsible for creating systems that are not only correct but also scalable, maintainable, and reusable.
- Performance and Scalability: Architect solutions that handle large-scale financial datasets with exceptional performance and reliability. You will focus on minimizing latency and optimizing resource usage.
- Quality and Review: Implement designs with a focus on clarity and long-term maintainability. Participate in rigorous code and design reviews to ensure our systems meet the highest standards of quality.
- Delivery and Deployment: Lead the effort to ship features using controlled rollout strategies. This ensures a smooth experience for both our internal users and our external customers.
- Collaboration and Leadership: Partner with product teams to turn requirements into durable technical solutions. You will also mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration within the five-person Blocks squad.
- Reliability and Monitoring: Defend platform reliability by implementing comprehensive monitoring and observability. You will establish rapid response strategies for any production issues.
Required Qualifications
- Proven Experience: Demonstrated success as a backend engineer, with a portfolio of production-ready systems in live environments.
- Object-Oriented Design: Extensive experience architecting software using object-oriented principles. Your expertise must include one or more of the following languages: Java, C++, Golang, Rust, Python, or Ruby.
- Problem-Solving: A proven ability to navigate complex technical challenges and devise effective, scalable solutions.
- Communication: Exceptional fluency in English is essential for clear communication with global stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
