AI Product Engineer

About the role

You own the end-to-end problem space for AI-augmented behavioral health features, from discovery and problem framing through implementation, validation, and iteration in production. You partner tightly with clinical, product, and design teams to translate member needs and clinical constraints into reliable, high-impact software solutions. You are accountable for the full lifecycle of your work, ensuring that outcomes, not just output, drive success in a regulated healthcare environment. You leverage AI tools to accelerate implementation, testing, and code review while maintaining rigorous standards for safety and correctness. You shape the engineering culture and practices that define how we build at Pelago, influencing tools, processes, and quality standards. You use data and experimentation to validate hypotheses and prove that your solutions meaningfully improve member care. You balance technical tradeoffs with clinical and product priorities to deliver solutions that are both impactful and feasible. You contribute to a scalable, maintainable codebase that supports hundreds of employers and health plans serving hundreds of thousands of members.

What you'll do

• Own meaningful product areas end-to-end, from problem discovery through production rollout and iteration.
• Design and evolve systems that enable safe, scalable, AI-augmented development and delivery.
• Use data and experimentation to validate whether solutions achieve intended member and clinical outcomes.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, data, and clinical teams to balance impact, constraints, and tradeoffs.
• Shape how we work, including our tools, processes, and culture as an active contributor to engineering practices.
• Partner with clinical experts to ensure that member safety, privacy, and regulatory requirements are met in every solution.
• Write and review code with an emphasis on correctness, reliability, and maintainability in a regulated domain.
• Build and maintain observability and monitoring to detect issues and measure real-world impact on member behaviors.
• Translate ambiguous problems into clear hypotheses and success metrics that guide discovery and delivery.
• Prioritize work based on member outcomes, clinical validity, and technical risk in a fast-paced environment.
• Implement AI-assisted features that improve access to care without compromising judgment or safety.
• Continuously learn and adapt by sharing insights from experiments, incidents, and user feedback with the broader team.

Requirements

• You are eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship now or at any point in the future.
• You are authorized to work in the United States without restriction and do not require work authorization sponsorship from our company for this role.
• You have the right to work in the United States for the duration of this position, and you will not require work authorization sponsorship at any point during your employment.
• You are not currently enrolled in any visa or immigration sponsorship program with another employer.
• You have at least a Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• You have 3+ years of experience building software products, with a track record of shipping user-facing features.
• You have experience working with AI tools in development workflows and can demonstrate how you use them to improve quality and speed.
• You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment where priorities can shift based on member needs and clinical input.
• You are comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and iterating based on data and feedback.
• You understand the importance of reliability, observability, and correctness in systems that impact health behaviors and outcomes.

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare, mental health, or substance use care delivery environments.
• Familiarity with regulatory and privacy considerations in health-related software.
• Experience building and deploying AI-augmented features in production.
