Senior Python Engineer, Document App
Job description
About the role
This position focuses on the core systems that enable document collaboration at global scale. You will own the content engine and the real-time collaboration layer, ensuring that complex editing operations remain consistent and reliable across a distributed fleet. The role emphasizes backend architecture while maintaining a balance between rapid feature delivery and long-term system health. It is a remote position based in Spain. You will work closely with product and design to translate high level requirements into robust technical solutions that scale. Your decisions will directly influence the reliability and performance of a platform used by teams around the world to create and manage critical business documents.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design backend services that support concurrent document editing for large user populations while maintaining strict consistency guarantees.
Define and evolve the content model and data persistence layer, including schema decisions, migration strategies, and compatibility guarantees across releases.
Build and maintain event-driven pipelines using technologies such as Kafka and NATS to process high volumes of user interactions in near real time.
Champion reliability, observability, and operational excellence across a large number of Python microservices deployed in production environments.
Drive features from initial design through production deployment and ongoing monitoring to understand real-world behavior and inform future iterations.
Investigate and prototype AI-powered document workflows, including agentic scenarios, to support future product capabilities and differentiated customer experiences.
Integrate with external systems to extend what documents can do inside business workflows, ensuring seamless interoperability and data consistency.
Share knowledge and mentor teammates by promoting coding patterns and practices that improve quality, readability, and long term maintainability.
Requirements
Bring multiple years of Python experience in production environments that serve demanding user loads without compromising performance or stability.
Demonstrate deep understanding of relational databases, including schema design, migrations, query optimization, and performance tuning under heavy concurrency.
Possess hands-on experience with message queues and event-driven architectures, using systems such as Kafka, NATS, or similar technologies to build resilient pipelines.
Be fluent in asynchronous programming with AsyncIO in real-world services, leveraging non blocking I/O to achieve high throughput and responsiveness.
Have operated microservice-based applications at scale and managed their full lifecycle, including deployment, monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
Think clearly about distributed systems challenges such as consistency, ordering, failure modes, and recovery strategies to design robust and fault tolerant solutions.
Follow product delivery from initial concept through launch, observing how features perform once in production and using data to guide improvements.
Nice to have
Hands-on experience with AI agents, LLM workflows, or agentic systems applied to document products, including prompt engineering and evaluation strategies.
Skills & tools
Core language: Python
Relational data and caching: PostgreSQL, Redis
Messaging and events: Kafka, NATS
Async runtime: AsyncIO
Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, AWS
Observability: Grafana stack (Loki, Tempo, Mimir)
