About the company
OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research organization headquartered in San Francisco. It was initially founded in Delaware in 2015 as a nonprofit entity. The organization now operates through a unique structure, comprising OpenAI Group PBC, a for-profit public benefit corporation, which is partially overseen by the OpenAI Foundation nonprofit. This structure evolved from a for-profit subsidiary created in 2019. A 2025 restructuring converted this subsidiary into the PBC, with the nonprofit retaining 26% ownership. OpenAI is dedicated to developing advanced generative AI models, notably the GPT series of large language models. The introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022 significantly accelerated widespread interest and development in generative AI. Microsoft has provided substantial investment, exceeding $13 billion, and supplies critical Azure cloud computing resources. A share sale in October 2025 raised $6.6 billion, valuing the company at $500 billion. The company has faced legal challenges in 2023 and 2024 concerning alleged copyright infringement related to training data. In November 2023, CEO Sam Altman was briefly removed by the board, then reinstated within five days following a board reconstruction. Throughout 2024, approximately half of the company's AI safety researchers departed, citing concerns about the prioritization of safety objectives.
