About the role
onX is seeking a Growth Engineering Manager to lead a team of skilled Growth Engineers specializing in optimizing the in-app user experience. The growth pod is part of our Growth Domain team, which works to improve key metrics that directly drive business impact. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a deep understanding of mobile app ecosystems. It will report to the VP of Data. You will own the end to end lifecycle of growth experiments, from ideation and prioritization through implementation and analysis, ensuring that your team delivers measurable business outcomes. You will build and nurture a high performing engineering team where talent development, clear expectations, and decisive performance management are the foundation of success. As an escalation point for complex cross functional initiatives, you will make high judgment decisions that define how work is executed across multiple teams while staying grounded in long term strategy. You will leverage the latest tooling and technologies, including AI, to increase the quality, speed, and impact of your teams contributions. Your work will directly shape the products and experiences that help millions of outdoor enthusiasts confidently explore the world.

What you'll do
Lead and oversee the design, prioritization, and implementation of experiments to improve key growth metrics, balancing competing priorities across the team and organization.
Manage three or more direct reports, setting clear performance expectations, differentiating talent, addressing underperformance decisively, and amplifying meaningful contributions to build a high-performing team.
Serve as an escalation point for complex, cross-team issues, making high-judgment decisions that shape how work is done across multiple teams while grounding those decisions in long-term strategy.
Drive experiment velocity and quality at scale by defining structure, milestones, and success criteria - including for greenfield initiatives where no prior framework exists.
Lead cross-department projects by aligning participating groups around shared goals, progress, and outcomes, adjusting between leading and following based on context and ownership.
Demonstrate strong hiring judgment to build a team capable of sustained performance and growth, with an eye toward future capability and capacity needs.
Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to user growth, providing regular updates to senior leadership with recommendations that connect near-term actions to longer-term departmental goals.
Analyze data to identify trends, patterns, and insights, using those findings to drive continuous improvement and inform functional decisions.
Develop and maintain dashboards and reporting tools to provide real-time visibility into growth metrics.
Coach team members toward stronger innovation by raising expectations for idea quality and follow-through, and promote test-and-iterate approaches within the team and across peer groups.
Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices, occasionally contributing insights to company strategy informed by operational and people leadership experience.
Communicate results and recommendations clearly across disciplines, presenting to varied audiences including senior leadership, cross-functional partners, and technical teams.
Requirements
At least five (5) years of experience directly managing software engineers.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Economics, Business, or relevant experience.
Strong understanding of mobile app ecosystems, including iOS and Android development practices and product lifecycles.
Experience with experimentation platforms and frameworks, such as A/B testing tools and methodology.
Proficiency in SQL and the ability to write complex queries to analyze large datasets and derive actionable insights.
Comfortable working in a fast paced, high ambiguity environment where priorities change frequently and context switching is required.
Proven ability to make data driven decisions while balancing business impact, technical tradeoffs, and user experience.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence without direct authority and present to senior leadership.
Nice to have
Experience with modern backend technologies such as Go, Elixir, Rust, and Python.
Experience with cloud platforms like Google Cloud Platform, including services such as Kubernetes and Google Cloud Build.
Experience with CI/CD tools such as Git / GitHub, Travis CI, and similar systems.
Knowledge of database technologies including MySQL and PostGIS.
Understanding of containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience with Linux based development environments.
Exposure to mapping and geospatial data tools and libraries.
Experience in the outdoor, recreation, or location based technology industry.
