Senior Software Engineer, Full-stack
Job description
About the role
This position involves building and refining software for military planning and operational coordination. You will contribute to a platform that enhances collaboration and decision-making in high-stakes environments, working across the entire application stack. The role requires a disciplined engineer who can navigate complex constraints while delivering robust solutions under demanding conditions. You will work closely with stakeholders to translate strategic objectives into technical requirements and executable features. The position emphasizes ownership of systems that directly impact mission readiness and operational effectiveness. You will be expected to mentor less experienced engineers through code reviews and design discussions. Success in this role depends on your ability to balance detailed technical execution with a broad understanding of system-wide implications.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Take ownership of the complete development lifecycle for features and systems that directly benefit users, contributing from user interface design to backend services and underlying infrastructure.
- Adapt to shifting business priorities by moving between different teams, applying your skills to critical challenges and quickly becoming proficient in new areas.
- Enhance the platform's ability to scale, its dependability, and its security by improving shared systems, architectural designs, and foundational engineering practices.
- Collaborate with other engineers to influence technical choices, striking a balance between the long-term health of the platform and the speed of delivering customer value.
- Help shape the adoption of AI-assisted development tools, using modern technology to speed up development while upholding high standards for quality and maintainability.
- Drive significant results by addressing the most important problems, making considered decisions that allow the team to progress rapidly without compromising engineering quality.
- Design and implement integrations with external data systems, ensuring reliable data flows and consistent behavior across distributed components.
- Optimize application performance through careful analysis of bottlenecks, inefficient algorithms, and suboptimal resource utilization.
- Participate in on-call rotations to respond to operational issues and support continuous availability of critical services.
- Contribute to architectural documentation and standards that guide future development and ensure consistency across the codebase.
- Evaluate new libraries, frameworks, and tools to determine their suitability for production use in regulated environments.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing constructive feedback, sharing best practices, and promoting a culture of continuous learning.
Requirements
- A minimum of 6 years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent practical background.
- Extensive experience in designing distributed systems, defining APIs (such as REST, GraphQL, or gRPC), and creating scalable data structures.
- Practical experience in building and managing cloud-based applications using tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Demonstrated capability to work across the entire technology stack, from front-end applications to back-end services and infrastructure components.
- Experience successfully completing complex technical projects in dynamic and fast-paced settings.
- Strong communication abilities, enabling clear explanation of technical decisions and effective collaboration with engineering colleagues.
- A proven track record of writing clean, testable, and maintainable code that adheres to industry best practices.
- Comfort working in environments where requirements evolve based on operational feedback and mission needs.
Nice to have
- Experience with system monitoring, performance tracking, and responding to operational incidents.
- Prior work in environments with strict compliance requirements, such as FedRAMP, SOC 2, HIPAA, or within the Department of Defense.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and systems for distributed messaging.
- Knowledge of authentication and identity management systems, including OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, or RBAC/ABAC.
Skills & tools
- Front-end: React, TypeScript, Vite, reusable component libraries, client-side performance monitoring.
- Back-end: Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, secure RESTful APIs, distributed service architectures.
