Customer Success Engineer, Battle Road [Ft. Leavenworth]
Job description
About the role
Onebrief builds collaboration and AI-powered workflow software for military planning and operational coordination. The Customer Success Engineer at Battle Road operates at the intersection of engineering and mission execution within high-stakes defense environments. You will deploy AtomEngine into real-world military training environments, including Secret and air-gapped systems, where you will configure, extend, troubleshoot, and improve the platform while working directly with customers. You may be supporting live exercises, adapting simulations, or ensuring the software performs under pressure alongside warfighters in the field. You are the last mile between Battle Road's simulation technology and the warfighter, ensuring the technology enables decisive action rather than obstructing it. This role demands a rare blend of technical depth, operational empathy, and resilience in demanding conditions where reliability is non-negotiable. You will translate complex military workflows into robust software behaviors while ensuring that every deployment aligns with the strategic objectives of the mission.
Key facts
What you'll do
Deploy, configure, and support AtomEngine in live military training environments, including classified and air-gapped systems, by extending entities, features, behaviors, sensors, and operational scenarios through AtomEngine tooling and scripting to reflect real-world requirements.
Embed onsite with customers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to understand operational needs, iterate alongside users, ensure successful deployments, and translate real-world friction into actionable Product and Engineering feedback by providing military context and operational priorities that enable engineering teams to prioritize effectively.
Integrate AtomEngine with partner systems by configuring and troubleshooting APIs, networking, infrastructure dependencies, and system connectivity, while resolving technical issues in real time during high-visibility exercises - including in front of large audiences - and implementing technical fixes to ensure the software functions optimally for upcoming customer exercises.
When not supporting active exercises, proactively identify and implement improvements from the enhancement backlog, contributing directly to the engineering backlog alongside the Software Engineering team using technologies such as Godot, C++, C#, and Python.
Communicate technical concepts clearly to military stakeholders, partners, and internal teams by explaining complex capabilities, engaging constructively with key stakeholders, and responding to challenging questions with clarity and professionalism under pressure.
Improve documentation, deployment processes, and operational repeatability to enable scalable deployments and long-term customer success across distributed operational environments.
Travel occasionally to support customer engagements and operational exercises, including rapid deployment scenarios that require adaptability and quick technical problem solving in austere conditions.
Serve as a subject matter expert for AtomEngine features and workflows, ensuring that customer teams can fully leverage the platform to achieve their training and mission objectives without unnecessary dependency on ongoing direct support.
Maintain strong situational awareness during live exercises, adapting support strategies in response to evolving operational requirements, security constraints, and time-critical demands.
Contribute observations and feedback from deployed environments directly into product development cycles to ensure that Onebrief solutions evolve in response to real operational needs rather than theoretical assumptions.
Champion best practices in configuration management, version control, and testing within military contexts, ensuring that changes are traceable, repeatable, and auditable in sensitive environments.
Act as a trusted advisor to both customers and internal teams, balancing empathy for operational constraints with the need to maintain platform integrity and performance standards.
Represent the voice of the customer within engineering and product discussions, ensuring that frontline insights drive meaningful improvements to the platform.
Support the development of training materials and enablement content that help new users become productive with AtomEngine quickly and confidently in operational settings.
Requirements
3+ years of experience in software engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or another customer-facing engineering role involving hands-on development.
Demonstrated experience writing and maintaining production-quality software, with proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C++, C#, Python, GDScript, or similar.
Experience troubleshooting software systems, integrations, networking, or distributed applications, with strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Comfortable working independently in fast-paced, ambiguous environments while collaborating closely with customers and engineering teams.
Prior military experience and Active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
Willingness and ability to work onsite at Fort Leavenworth daily and travel to other sites approximately 20% of the time.
Ability to obtain and maintain necessary security clearances and comply with all applicable defense and security requirements for access to classified information.
Commitment to operating safely and securely in environments where software failures can have real-world consequences, requiring diligence, precision, and thoroughness in all work products.
Willingness to adhere to strict deployment and change management processes designed to protect operational security and system reliability during critical missions.
Nice to have
Experience presenting or teaching technical concepts to large groups.
Experience in modeling, simulation, game engines, or defense-related systems.
Practical notes
Travel may be required to customer sites and operational environments.
Security clearance requirements apply and must be maintained throughout employment.
Work will be performed primarily onsite at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, with occasional travel to other defense and training locations.
