About the role
The intern will partner with senior engineers to drive the compliance and safety posture of a next-generation hybrid VTOL aircraft program. You will own the extraction and structuring of requirements directly from aviation standards and guidelines to ensure traceability and compliance. A core part of the role involves creating functional system models using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to visualize complex aircraft behaviors and interfaces. You will support the preparation of structured documentation packages that are essential for internal design reviews and certification activities. The position requires analyzing competitor benchmarks to evaluate industry best practices and performance gaps. You will assist in developing aircraft-level safety assessments, including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). Finally, you will maintain clear visualisations of safety data, such as risk matrices and traceability diagrams, to communicate risk mitigation strategies effectively.

What you'll do
- Extract and organise requirements from standards and guidelines to build a robust compliance framework.
- Support the preparation of structured documentation packages tailored for internal reviews and engineering validation.
- Contribute to DOA process mapping activities to define the boundaries and responsibilities of the certification scope.
- Create functional system models using MBSE tools to capture system architectures, interfaces, and behaviors.
- Perform benchmark studies for competitors to identify technical trends and regulatory strategies.
- Support the development and maintenance of aircraft-level hazard logs and risk classification tables.
- Assist in structuring and updating Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA).
- Ensure traceability between hazards, safety requirements, mitigations, and verification methods through systematic data management.
- Prepare structured technical visualisations such as risk matrices and traceability diagrams for stakeholder reviews.
- Work closely with Safety and Qualification Engineers during development iterations to align on objectives.
- Translate complex regulatory requirements into structured engineering artefacts, including compliance matrices.
- Analyse and interpret data to support aircraft-level safety assessments under the SORA framework.
- Apply solid engineering fundamentals to solve qualification and safety challenges in a documentation-intensive environment.
- Think systematically across engineering and regulatory domains to ensure alignment between design and certification goals.
Requirements
- Being enrolled in or recently completed a Bachelor's or advanced degree program in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Good understanding of engineering fundamentals and structured problem-solving approaches.
- Strong proficiency in MS Office applications, with expert-level skills in Excel for data organisation and analysis.
- Ability to use model-based engineering tools such as Capella for systems architecture and requirement management.
- Ability to work effectively in analytical and documentation-focused assignments over extended periods.
- Experience working in relevant group projects or structured technical environments that simulate industry workflows.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work effectively with others and be a participative team member in a fast-paced engineering setting.
- Interest in aircraft qualification processes and safety engineering to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with aviation standards such as DO-178C, DO-254, and ARP4761 is beneficial for context.
- Exposure to safety analysis methodologies like FMEA, FHA, and SORA is a distinct advantage.
- Experience with requirements management tools such as Jama or Polarion is preferred.
- Knowledge of MBSE frameworks like SysML and tools like Cameo Systems Modeler.
- Understanding of VTOL aircraft configurations and electric propulsion systems.
- Experience with data visualization tools to create clear and concise technical charts.

This is a full-time internship based in Munich, Germany. The role requires adherence to strict documentation standards and regulatory processes. No travel is required for this position.
