About the role
You will architect and evolve the core routing services that power Nuro Driver™ decision-making for safe and efficient autonomous vehicle operations. You will own the design and implementation of distributed systems that process massive real-time routing workloads across cloud and edge environments. You will collaborate with data science and mapping teams to tightly integrate map intelligence and prediction models into routing workflows. You will define scalable solutions that balance algorithmic precision with operational constraints under strict safety requirements. You will lead cross-functional initiatives to standardize routing practices and tooling across expanding product lines. You will mentor engineers on best practices for resilient, observable, and maintainable routing infrastructure.

What you'll do
Design and implement backend microservices that expose routing capabilities to downstream applications and fleet systems.
Optimize routing algorithms to compute faster and more accurate paths while respecting dynamic constraints such as traffic, road rules, and vehicle capabilities.
Build monitoring and analytics infrastructure to measure routing performance, latency, and reliability across large-scale deployments.
Collaborate with product and operations teams to translate business requirements into robust routing features and service level objectives.
Develop and maintain on-vehicle routing modules that operate under resource-constrained environments and real-time conditions.
Partner with mapping and localization teams to evolve graph representations and keep road network data aligned with physical changes.
Define and automate deployment pipelines to ensure safe, reliable, and rapid delivery of routing updates to test and production fleets.
Lead technical design discussions and code reviews to uphold high standards for scalability, correctness, and maintainability.
Investigate and prototype new routing approaches using simulation and real-world data to support long-term product strategy.
Communicate routing tradeoffs and system behavior clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through documentation and presentations.
Contribute to open source tooling where appropriate to accelerate development and engage with broader autonomous driving communities.
Drive root cause analysis for routing incidents and partner with reliability teams to implement preventative improvements.
Support the creation of routing benchmarks and evaluation frameworks to compare algorithmic changes objectively.
Help shape the roadmap for routing capabilities by identifying opportunities for differentiation and operational efficiency.
Requirements
You have at least 4+ years of building and scaling realtime server-side applications in production environments.
You have worked on large-scale complex algorithm problems and know how to balance correctness, performance, and development velocity.
You know how to choose the right storage technology for the job, with experience across relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, non-relational stores such as BigTable, Cassandra, or Redis, and data warehouses such as BigQuery or Snowflake.
You are proficient with RPC frameworks such as gRPC or Thrift and pubsub systems like Kafka, Cloud PubSub, or Celery.
You have extensive experience with cloud providers such as GCP or AWS, including core services, networking, and operational best practices.
You are comfortable working with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes, or are willing to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.
You have strong programming fundamentals and are comfortable writing clean, testable, and maintainable code in languages such as Python or C++.
You are comfortable reading and interpreting technical documentation and specifications to integrate external systems and services.
You have experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product, design, data science, and operations, to deliver solutions that meet business and safety requirements.
You communicate clearly and regularly with engineers, PMs, UX researchers, and other stakeholders about requirements, designs, and tradeoffs.
Nice to have
Experience with routing algorithms such as shortest path, A*, or custom optimization techniques.
Experience with map data structures, graph databases, and spatial indexing methods.
Proficiency in C++ for performance-critical components.
Experience training or deploying machine learning models that influence routing decisions.
Experience with simulation platforms used for autonomous driving validation.
