Manager, Assessment Content
Job description
About the role
Assessment content leadership guides the strategy, quality, and scale of subject coverage across the organization.
Most organizations organize this kind of work into small teams with a clear owner for each project. People are expected to set priorities, share progress, and ask for help early. Written communication matters because decisions are often recorded and revisited. Successful professionals in any field share a few habits: they take notes, keep commitments, and communicate in writing. Teams value people who make their work easy to review and build on.
Key facts
What you'll do
Quarterly production plans are turned into team assignments, milestones, and vendor scopes to drive execution across subject areas.
Assessment Content Designers and Content Contributors are coached, developed, and managed, with performance reviews and bench development handled directly when no Content Lead is present. Clear, repeatable processes are created, and operational excellence is driven to support the assessment content team.
Requirements
Eight or more years of experience in assessment content development at commercial scale within an EdTech company, testing vendor, or educational publisher.
At least two years of people-management experience demonstrated through coaching and developing item writers and content leads.
Command of CCSS, NGSS, and state-specific frameworks across multiple K-12 content areas to set quality and alignment expectations even outside your strongest subject.
Expert understanding of educational assessment design across formative, common, and summative contexts, including measurement principles and Depth of Knowledge.
A track record of managing freelance contributors and third-party vendors at scale, including building and running a quality framework with calibration and performance review.
Strong project and production management skills for scoping work, building milestones, surfacing risk, and delivering against aggressive timelines.
Experience designing repeatable processes and championing tooling that helps a content team scale efficiently.
Strong cross-functional partnership skills and comfort collaborating with Product, Engineering, and customer-facing teams.
Excellent written and verbal communication to translate requirements and feedback across content, product, and engineering audiences.
Nice to have
Collaboration with Product and Engineering on AI/ML-assisted content generation, including evaluating model outputs and defining guardrails for safe use.
Familiarity with content authoring tools or interoperability standards such as QTI to streamline integration and quality checks.
Classroom teaching experience in one or more K-12 content areas to ground assessment decisions in real classroom practice.
Exposure to item performance and psychometric data to translate data insights into content revision priorities.
Experience leading content operations through significant scale or workflow change, such as new platforms, new authoring models, or new vendor strategy.
Experience working with Pendo, Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence), Tableau, and Heap to support analysis and operational improvements.
Practical notes
Employment offers are contingent on successful background check completion.
Typical interview steps
Interviews in this field typically test judgment, communication, and fit as much as technical skill. Be ready to describe a challenge you faced, what you did, and what you learned.
