Senior Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
Senior Software Engineers in LATAM will architect and deliver learning products. The role focuses on building systems using Javascript and Typescript together with a core object-oriented language such as Java or C++. Implementation work runs in production environments and directly influences how students and educators experience the platform. You will translate complex instructional requirements into resilient backend systems that power global educational experiences. The work demands rigorous thinking about data integrity, system performance, and user impact at scale. You will operate at the intersection of education and technology, solving problems that affect millions of learners. Your decisions will shape the reliability and capabilities of the platform used by students and educators around the world.
Key facts
What you will do
Design intake pipelines that reliably ingest learning data while preserving integrity under load.
Build core services in Java or C++ and integrate AI agents to amplify development speed and reliability.
Refactor legacy components to maintain service maintainability as traffic and feature complexity increase.
Review pull requests with attention to performance, correctness, and production readiness.
Ship features behind controlled rollouts and use observability to validate behavior in real classrooms.
Collaborate with partners to align interfaces and data contracts, enabling safe integration at scale.
Champion testing and deployment practices that reduce risk and keep feedback loops short.
Explore new AI-native patterns that could transform how learners interact with content during live sessions.
Instrument systems to capture detailed telemetry, using insights to drive iterative improvements in reliability and UX.
Own the full lifecycle of critical services, from initial design through deployment, monitoring, and continuous optimization.
Establish robust error handling and recovery mechanisms to ensure high availability for time-sensitive learning interactions.
Define and maintain architectural guardrails that keep the platform secure, scalable, and performant across regions.
Partner closely with product and instructional teams to translate learning science into durable technical specifications.
Lead incident responses, conducting blameless postmortems that turn operational learnings into preventative controls.
Requirements
Bring three to five years of professional experience building server-side systems.
Demonstrate fluency in Javascript and Typescript and comfort with a full CI/CD lifecycle.
Understand object-oriented design and work effectively in Java or C#.
Operate services on AWS and reason about performance at scale.
Use agentic coding tools to accelerate implementation and multiply personal impact.
Maintain a strong bias for action, balancing speed with attention to correctness and long-term maintainability.
Communicate clearly and professionally, ensuring alignment across distributed teams and stakeholders.
Adhere to coding standards, security practices, and architectural principles that keep systems robust and maintainable.
Nice to have
Contribute to open source projects that touch learning or education domains.

Company overview
Nerdy, the company behind Varsity Tutors and listed on the NYSE under NRDY, is redrawing the blueprint of learning. The Live + AI™ platform fuses real-time human expertise with proprietary generative-AI systems, setting a new bar for measurable academic impact at global scale. The organization recruits technologists who operate like solo founders, turning ambiguous problems into shipping code, iterating faster than markets move, and compounding advantage with every data point. In an environment where top performers deliver substantially higher use, the company backs those who play to win.
How the company competes
AI-Native at every level: From the CEO to day-one hires, everyone builds and ships with generative AI. If you are not wielding AI, you are not done.
Entrepreneurial velocity: Move at founder speed, prototype in hours, and measure in real user outcomes. Slow teams die.
Free-market rigor: Ideas rise or fall on merit and results, without committees, politics, or caps on upside.
Full-stack ownership: You design, build, and run what you ship; accountability is a feature, not a bug.
Reward for contribution: Pay rises with impact, not just years. Outstanding results earn outsized rewards. Both outcomes and how they are achieved are formally evaluated, with emphasis on living leadership principles and effective AI use.
Relentless exploration: Push the frontier of generative AI in live learning and continuously question legacy assumptions.
Apolitical stance: Stay focused on mission-aligned outcomes, avoiding distractions or unrelated causes.
Practical next steps
before proceeding.
If you are a technically minded builder who thrives on open competition, personal responsibility, and the chance to redefine how the world learns while stretching the limits of generative AI, this role represents the most ambitious and rewarding work of your career.
