About the role
N26 is actively searching for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Platform Engineering domain within the Connectivity group to help define the future of their Edge infrastructure. The role focuses on architecting and maintaining a unified Edge platform responsible for handling all customer and partner traffic entering and exiting the network. In this capacity, you will be instrumental in upholding the highest standards of security and performance that the platform demands. You will work closely with distributed teams to ensure the technical foundations support both robust internal operations and external integrations. The position requires a deep commitment to establishing scalable and reliable backend systems that serve a global user base. You will play a key role in driving architectural consistency and setting the long-term vision for the Edge platform. Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and maintain a secure, high-performance Edge platform for all incoming and outgoing traffic, ensuring low latency and high availability.
- Establish software design standards, system architecture patterns, and code quality benchmarks to guide the engineering organization.
- Partner with SREs and other engineers to build infrastructure that serves both technical and non-technical internal users, improving collaboration and efficiency.
- Manage service observability, testing, and scalability to ensure production readiness and the ability to handle traffic spikes reliably.
- Participate in architectural planning and roadmap development for backend systems, providing technical leadership and strategic direction.
- Mentor team members and promote knowledge sharing across the organization to foster growth and consistency in engineering practices.
- Define and implement CI/CD pipelines that enable rapid, safe, and automated deployment of edge services to various regions.
- Collaborate with product and security teams to ensure all platform features comply with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues by analyzing logs, metrics, and traces to identify root causes quickly and effectively.
- Explore and evaluate new technologies to integrate into the Edge platform, ensuring the stack remains modern and competitive.
- Own the lifecycle of critical backend services, from design and implementation through to retirement and migration planning.
- Facilitate technical design reviews and code inspections to maintain high standards across the codebase and architecture.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in backend software engineering, with a proven track record of delivering scalable systems.
- Proficiency in JVM-based languages, specifically Java or Kotlin, and experience with frameworks like Spring to build robust services.
- Knowledge of software architecture including microservices, event-driven design, and REST/gRPC APIs to design flexible and resilient systems.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native development and AWS, including usage of compute, storage, and networking services.
- Background in CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and SRE/DevOps practices to automate operations and reduce manual effort.
- Commitment to automated testing, documentation, and system observability to ensure maintainable and transparent systems.
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, security best practices, and distributed systems to build reliable edge solutions.
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams, communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in Golang or Python to support diverse development needs and enable faster prototyping of new features.
- Experience managing and deploying Kubernetes workloads to orchestrate containerized services at scale.
- Familiarity with AI-related AWS services such as SageMaker or Bedrock to explore future integration opportunities.
- Background in AI/ML platforms or a strong interest in developing expertise in this area to contribute to innovative data-driven features.
