Senior Software Engineer

About the role

This position is for a Senior Software Engineer, Equipment Monitoring, at Motive, where you will own the backend systems that provide complete visibility into the location, utilization, and health of critical equipment. You will design and operate ingestion and stream-processing pipelines that convert raw IoT telemetry into accurate real-time locations, geofence events, trips, and alerts for assets such as trailers, reefers, and construction machinery. Collaboration with Embedded and IoT teams on device payloads and end-to-end data flows will be a central part of your daily work. You will build highly observable, reliable, and scalable backend services to process telemetry from hundreds of thousands of devices in the field. Your responsibilities will include developing and maintaining scalable APIs for both internal and external applications. You will use AI tools such as Cursor and CoPilot to increase your productivity and code quality. This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives at the intersection of hardware and large-scale cloud services and who demonstrates strong ownership and problem-solving skills.

What you'll do

Architect and implement backend services that process telemetry from hundreds of thousands of IoT devices, including sensors, beacons, and asset gateways.

Design, build, and operate stream-processing pipelines with Kafka and Flink to power geofencing, alerting, trip construction, and real-time asset location tracking.

Develop and maintain scalable APIs that serve internal and external applications with high reliability and performance.

Collaborate closely with Embedded, IoT, and cross-functional teams to define and enforce device data contracts and ensure end-to-end feature delivery.

Champion engineering excellence by driving proactive improvements in code health, system integrity, and operational reliability.

Operate and monitor our AWS cloud infrastructure, ensuring systems remain available, performant, and secure.

Use AI tools such as Cursor and CoPilot to enhance productivity, code quality, and consistency across the codebase.

Mentor fellow engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning, growth, and knowledge sharing within the team.

Translate complex operational requirements into robust technical solutions that scale with our growing customer base.

Requirements

You hold a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Computer Science or a related discipline.

You bring five or more years of software development experience building production-grade systems.

You have a proven track record designing distributed systems and event-driven or stream-processing pipelines using Kafka, Flink, Kinesis, or similar technologies.

You demonstrate proficiency in modern programming languages, with additional experience in Ruby, Golang, Kotlin, or Java being advantageous.

You are experienced working with relational and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, and Cassandra.

You have built and operated cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP, Azure, or private cloud environments.

You possess a strong ownership mindset and exhibit excellent problem-solving abilities in complex, ambiguous situations.

You are authorized for U.S. export-controlled commodities and technologies and can obtain the necessary authorization if required.

Nice to have

Background in IoT or geospatial systems.

This role is full-time and offers hybrid work options in San Francisco, California, and Seattle, Washington.

Compensation details are provided as a range, with final figures based on education, work experience, and certifications.

Certain roles may include restricted stock units.
