Sr AI Engineer - Data
Job description
About the role
You will architect and own the data foundation that powers financial products used by credit unions and their members on a daily basis. In this role, you will design, implement, and operate data-heavy features that turn complex credit information into clear, useful next steps for end users. You will work closely with AI agents as part of the engineering workflow, using them to handle meaningful implementation work while you set direction, review outputs, and own what ships to production. You will continuously improve the underlying data models, pipelines, and multi-tenant systems that keep Meridianlink Coach reliable, secure, and scalable as traffic and data volume grow. You will monitor production systems, investigate issues, and fix root causes while helping the team make clear, practical technical decisions that balance speed with safety. Because our products handle sensitive financial data, you will move quickly without compromising security, trust, or compliance. You will also help build what comes next by using and improving our AI agents and contributing to the evolution of our engineering practices. If you enjoy turning complex data problems into simple, dependable systems and want to help define AI-native engineering, this role is for you.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own data-heavy features from design through production, planning pragmatic solutions for rising traffic and data volume while coordinating with stakeholders.
- Improve data models, pipelines, migrations, and multi-tenant systems to ensure correctness, performance, and long-term maintainability.
- Work in our TypeScript monorepo with Hono, Drizzle/Postgres, and AWS infrastructure managed with SST/Pulumi across Lambda, SQS, EventBridge, and S3.
- Use and refine our existing Terraform or equivalent infrastructure patterns, recognizing that experience with Terraform, AWS CDK, or similar tools transfers well to our stack.
- Monitor production systems, investigate issues, and fix root causes, turning operational signals into durable improvements.
- Help the team make clear, practical technical decisions by weighing tradeoffs in data modeling, reliability, and product impact.
- Work with or touch React 19 and React Router 7 when responsibilities cross into the product layer and user interface.
- Integrate third-party and public APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic Claude, applying strong backend engineering skills in a typed language to build robust integrations.
- Apply sound judgment when working with sensitive financial data and high-impact changes, ensuring that safety and compliance are maintained.
- Maintain current, hands-on experience using AI coding tools, reviewing their output, and incorporating their generated artifacts into production workflows.
- Communicate clearly in writing, demonstrate strong product sense, and comfortably own work end to end from conception through deployment and iteration.
- Adapt to evolving priorities by solving ambiguous problems and translating requirements into reliable data-centric solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to align data strategy with product goals and member outcomes.
- Contribute to the long-term health of the codebase by improving observability, testing, and documentation for data systems.
Requirements
- Bring 5+ years of experience building, scaling, and running production software in complex, data-intensive environments.
- Demonstrate strong backend engineering skills in a typed language with a portfolio of systems you have designed, built, and maintained.
- Show deep experience with relational data modeling, migrations, and production data systems that must remain performant and reliable at scale.
- Consistently exercise sound judgment when working with sensitive data, high-impact changes, and strict operational constraints.
- Have current, hands-on experience using AI coding tools and actively reviewing their output for correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Communicate clearly in writing, with strong product sense and comfort owning work end to end from discovery to production.
- Thrive in a fast-moving environment where ownership, clarity, and pragmatic tradeoffs are essential to delivering reliable data products.
- Be comfortable working with sensitive financial data and understand the importance of maintaining trust, safety, and compliance in every decision.
Nice to have
- Experience with TypeScript, Postgres, serverless AWS, or event-driven systems that align closely with our technology stack.
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK, and experience managing AWS services like Lambda, SQS, EventBridge, and S3.
- Exposure to Hono, Drizzle, SST, Pulumi, React 19, and React Router 7 in production settings.
- A track record of improving data pipelines, migrations, and multi-tenant architectures for scalability and reliability.
- Background in financial products, credit unions, or environments that handle sensitive member data.
- Experience contributing to AI-assisted development workflows and helping teams review and refine AI-generated code.
Practical notes
