Staff Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
Maybern is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the most complex and high-impact technical challenges that define the future of private fund management software. In this role, you will design and implement critical systems that enforce deterministic guard rails for fund managers managing trillions in capital. You will lead cross-functional initiatives that require deep technical judgment and the ability to navigate highly ambiguous problem spaces. This position demands an entrepreneurial mindset capable of elevating engineering standards and driving solutions from conception through production. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and correctness of the core platform that underpins our mission. Ultimately, you will shape the technical foundation that allows our customers to operate with confidence and transparency.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and build distributed systems that handle the massive scale and complexity of private fund data, ensuring performance and correctness under strict regulatory constraints.
- Lead the design of foundational platform components, setting long-term architectural direction that balances innovation with operational stability.
- Mentor and guide senior engineers, elevating the overall technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing sessions.
- Partner with product leaders to de-risk new feature proposals, translating ambitious product visions into technically sound and feasible implementations.
- Drive the resolution of critical production incidents, diagnosing hard-to-reproduce issues and implementing robust fixes that prevent recurrence.
- Optimize data-intensive workflows, focusing on efficient processing pipelines that reduce latency and improve throughput for core fund operations.
- Define and enforce engineering best practices, ensuring that our systems remain maintainable, observable, and secure as the platform grows.
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies where appropriate, conducting technical spikes to validate approaches for future platform needs.
- Collaborate closely with finance and operations domain experts to ensure technical solutions accurately reflect real-world fund management workflows.
- Own the end-to-end delivery of complex projects, coordinating with distributed teams to deliver high-quality software on demanding timelines.
- Create detailed technical specifications that capture system behavior, data flows, and edge cases to align stakeholders and reduce ambiguity.
- Champion testing and quality initiatives, promoting a culture where reliability and performance are non-negotiable priorities.
Requirements
- Bring a minimum of 7 years of professional engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and shipping world-class software products in production environments.
- Demonstrate extensive experience designing and operating systems that process millions of records in near real-time without compromising accuracy.
- Show a history of leading product initiatives from initial concept through launch and post-launch optimization, owning outcomes end to end.
- Possess expert-level knowledge of backend system architecture, distributed systems principles, and scalable data platform design.
- Have deep proficiency with Python, particularly frameworks such as Django, for building maintainable and testable server-side applications.
- Show strong experience with asynchronous task processing using tools like Celery or Temporal to manage long-running and critical workflows.
- Demonstrate mastery of caching strategies and message queues, leveraging technologies such as Redis and SQS to build responsive systems.
- Bring hands-on experience with major cloud platforms, especially AWS, including infrastructure as code and operational best practices.
- Show advanced skills in relational database design and querying with PostgreSQL or similar SQL databases to ensure data integrity and performance.
- Have some full-stack experience, including comfort with modern frontend technologies such as TypeScript and React to effectively collaborate with UI teams.
- Have a track record of mentoring other engineers, serving as a technical lead, and contributing to the growth of healthy engineering cultures.
- Have thrived in fast-paced, high-pressure startup environments, demonstrating the ability to ship features quickly while maintaining quality.
Nice to have
- Experience with additional programming languages and runtime environments beyond the core stack.
- Familiarity with formal methods or techniques for ensuring correctness in financial calculations.
- Background working with regulated industries and understanding compliance requirements specific to finance.
