This Senior Autonomous Release Engineer II position represents a frontline role focused on solving complex problems with initiative, experience, and technical skill. Success in this role requires confidence supported by deep knowledge and practical experience. The position sits at the intersection of release execution and CI/CD, autonomy system integration and debugging, and validation, simulation, and safety gating. The primary responsibility is ensuring software is not only releasable but also safe, well-understood, and performs reliably in real-world conditions.
The Senior Autonomous Release Engineer II will lead the resolution of challenging and complex problems inherent to vehicle autonomy. This role leads the future design of May Mobility autonomy systems and investigates the system's most difficult issues. Autonomy Release Engineers manage the integrated functioning of the autonomy system. They interact directly with sensor hardware, middleware, the autonomy software stack, networking, health monitoring, compute platforms, and electronic systems. These engineers drive architectural design and hardware/software design through cross-functional collaboration. Additionally, they create instrumentation to verify that the autonomy system functions correctly. They become the essential resource for understanding how new features integrate, how the system might fail, and how to evolve the system for greater effectiveness or efficiency while maintaining operational continuity.
This is a hands-on, systems-oriented role demanding strong technical judgment. The individual is expected to actively challenge release readiness when necessary and act as a primary safeguard for system quality. The position plays a key role in scaling release cadence without compromising safety. It involves close partnership with autonomy, infrastructure, engineering, validation, and operations teams. The Senior Autonomous Release Engineer II sets an example in initiative, data-driven decision making, design, and troubleshooting. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Autonomy Technical Release.
Essential Responsibilities
Release ownership and execution span the entire process, including major autonomy releases, incremental or performance-focused releases, and hotfixes or safety patches. The role involves managing branching strategy, versioning, and release cut processes while driving release readiness and go/no-go decisions. Cross-functional partnerships with Autonomy, Infrastructure, Validation, and Fleet Operations teams are essential.
The engineer acts as a system owner for release readiness, investigating and resolving complex issues arising from software and hardware interactions, distributed systems behavior, and discrepancies between on-vehicle performance and simulation results. This requires developing a deep understanding of the sensor stack, middleware, and autonomy stack, as well as compute platforms, networking, and configurations. The engineer serves as the go-to expert for inquiries regarding real-world failures, changes between releases, and system evolution. They enforce the stage-gated release framework to ensure integrity.

Requirements
Candidates must possess 3-5 years of experience releasing complex autonomy systems within regulated environments. A required understanding of MPDM technology and how sensor stacks interact with compute platforms during real operations is essential. The ability to navigate validation, simulation, and safety gating while coordinating across autonomy and infrastructure teams is mandatory. Experience investigating issues stemming from software and hardware interactions and distributed systems behavior affecting fleet operations is required. The candidate must act as the primary owner for release execution end-to-end for major releases and critical fixes.
