About the role
Luno is a cryptocurrency exchange that operates across multiple markets in Africa and beyond, providing a platform for buying, selling, and storing digital assets. The OTC Trader position is based in Cape Town or Johannesburg and involves managing over-the-counter trading operations for the platform. This role focuses on executing large-volume digital asset trades while maintaining market stability and supporting client needs throughout the trading process. The OTC Trader works closely with the trading desk and other internal teams to ensure efficient settlement and execution of transactions while connecting buyers and sellers at fair market prices.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Execute over-the-counter buy and sell orders for digital assets on behalf of institutional and retail clients
- Monitor market conditions and price movements to identify optimal entry and exit points for trades
- Manage the order book and ensure proper matching of buy and sell orders in the OTC desk
- Coordinate with the risk management team to assess exposure and set appropriate trade limits before execution
- Maintain relationships with liquidity providers and counterparties to ensure smooth and reliable trade execution
- Document all trades and settlements in the internal tracking systems for audit and compliance purposes
- Communicate trade confirmations and settlement details to clients in a clear and timely manner
- Support the development and improvement of OTC trading procedures and internal controls across the desk
- Analyze trade data and generate reports on trading volume, spreads, and execution quality for management review
- Collaborate with the compliance team to ensure all transactions meet regulatory requirements and internal policies
- Escalate any unusual market activity or trade discrepancies to the appropriate internal teams for resolution
- Participate in daily trading meetings to review open positions, discuss market developments, and align on strategy
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in trading digital assets or traditional financial instruments in an OTC or exchange environment
- Strong understanding of cryptocurrency markets, order types, and trading mechanics
- Ability to work with large transaction volumes and manage multiple trades simultaneously
- Attention to detail when processing trade instructions and verifying settlement details
- Good communication skills for interacting with clients, counterparties, and internal teams
- Familiarity with risk management principles and the ability to apply them in a trading context
- Willingness to work in Cape Town or Johannesburg as the primary work location
- A degree or equivalent qualification in finance, economics, or a related field
- Proven ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a high-volume trading environment
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret market data quickly and accurately
Nice to have
- Prior experience working at a cryptocurrency exchange or fintech company in a trading or support capacity
- Knowledge of South African financial regulations and compliance frameworks relevant to digital assets
- Experience with trading platforms or order management systems used in the crypto industry
- Additional language skills, particularly in languages commonly spoken across the African continent
- Background in risk analysis or compliance within a financial services setting
- Experience working with institutional clients or high-net-worth individuals in a financial services context
