About the role
LatchBio is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to take charge of the infrastructure layer that supports our innovative benchmarking solutions in computational biology. In this role, you will be responsible for managing container orchestration, distributed filesystems, cloud architecture, and database systems. As we continue to grow rapidly, there is a pressing need for improvements in areas such as container startup speeds, filesystem efficiency, and scaling operations. You will work closely with a dedicated team to enhance our infrastructure and support our mission to advance biological science.

What you'll do
- Lead the design and implementation of container orchestration systems, particularly Kubernetes, to enhance our infrastructure's efficiency.
- Develop and optimize distributed file systems that integrate metadata storage on PostgreSQL and blob storage on Amazon S3.
- Architect cloud solutions, utilizing AWS services to ensure scalability and cost-effectiveness for our operations.
- Improve database performance and reliability, focusing on PostgreSQL, to support our data-intensive applications.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to understand their needs and translate them into technical requirements for infrastructure improvements.
- Implement automated quality control processes within our benchmarking harness to validate model performance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure-related issues swiftly to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
- Participate in daily standup meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and priorities with the engineering team.
- Mentor junior engineers through code reviews and collaborative problem-solving sessions to enhance team skills and knowledge.
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in infrastructure engineering to continually improve our systems.
- Document architecture and processes to ensure clarity and facilitate onboarding for new team members.
Requirements
- Proven experience working with container orchestration systems, particularly Kubernetes.
- Strong proficiency in PostgreSQL, including performance tuning and optimization.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud infrastructure, especially AWS services and best practices.
- Solid understanding of modern Linux systems, including advanced features like eBPF and cgroups2.
- Experience with distributed systems and data storage solutions.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools to streamline deployment processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Nice to have
- Experience with data analysis and visualization tools, particularly in a biological context.
- Knowledge of machine learning frameworks and their application in biological research.
- Familiarity with security best practices in cloud infrastructure and data management.
