What you'll do
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on HGV tankers to ensure they meet safety and operational standards.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults in vehicles, utilizing diagnostic equipment and tools.
- Perform scheduled servicing and repairs, including oil changes, brake checks, and tire replacements, to maintain vehicle performance.
- Collaborate with the logistics team to ensure timely vehicle availability for scheduled jobs and emergency call-outs.
- Maintain accurate records of all repairs and maintenance work carried out on each vehicle.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, as well as company policies regarding vehicle maintenance and operation.
- Assist in the training and development of junior engineers and apprentices, sharing your expertise and knowledge.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training to stay updated with industry standards and practices.
- Work closely with suppliers and manufacturers to source parts and materials required for repairs and maintenance.
- Respond to breakdowns and emergencies, providing roadside assistance as needed to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with the management team to identify areas for improvement in vehicle maintenance processes.
- Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating effectively and supporting colleagues in their roles.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an HGV engineer or similar role, with a strong understanding of vehicle mechanics and systems.
- Relevant qualifications, such as an NVQ or City & Guilds in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent.
- A valid HGV driving license (Class 1 or Class 2) is essential for this position.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with team members and clients.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools and software used in vehicle maintenance.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by operational demands.
Nice to have
- Experience working with tanker vehicles specifically, including knowledge of their unique maintenance requirements.
- Previous experience in a similar role within the waste management or drainage industry.
- Additional certifications, such as a CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) or ADR (Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route) license.
- A proactive approach to health and safety, with a track record of implementing best practices in vehicle maintenance.
