What you'll do
- Serve as a technical lead responsible for designing, implementing, and advancing the core technologies that power our marketplace platform.
- Mentor and collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and key stakeholders to shape stable, resilient products that meet customer needs.
- Champion an engineering culture focused on shipping great products by advocating for modern technologies, best practices, and continuous improvement in both technical and operational workflows.
- Write and deploy new code on a daily basis, owning frontend features that deliver seamless user interactions and complex workflows for scientific buyers.
- Build and maintain backend services that support the entire marketplace, including robust integrations with critical data pipelines and frontend applications.
- Develop and manage external integrations with third-party systems, including product information APIs and order placement services from suppliers.
- Optimize search infrastructure to deliver fast, accurate, and contextually relevant results for complex scientific use-cases and data-rich product catalogs.
- Ensure system reliability, scalability, and security across the full stack, from the user interface through to data storage and processing layers.
- Collaborate with data and operations teams to improve data quality, pipeline performance, and the overall efficiency of procurement workflows.
- Explore and prototype new tools and methodologies, including AI-assisted development workflows, to accelerate delivery and enhance engineering productivity.
- Document technical designs and decisions to ensure clarity, maintainability, and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Participate in code reviews, incident response, and on-call rotations to uphold the highest standards of product quality and uptime.
- Contribute to long-term architectural planning and technical debt reduction to support sustainable growth.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or possess equivalent practical experience.
- Bring a minimum of 6 years of professional software engineering experience in relevant domains.
- Demonstrate a proven ability to tackle large, complex problems and translate them into executable, production-grade solutions.
- Show a history of owning technical and functional areas that involve working with key stakeholders to build stable, reliable, and customer-facing products.
- Exhibit strong ownership and initiative in forging new paths for enterprise-level greenfield and brownfield projects using modern technology stacks.
- Be effective at rapidly learning new technologies, frameworks, and tools, and applying them where they provide real value.
- Maintain a strong background in designing and developing modern frontend applications with robust supporting infrastructure.
- Deliver a track record of contributing to reliable, scalable, and high-performance software projects in production environments.
- Experience with modern software development lifecycle practices, including testing, continuous integration, and deployment pipelines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with Elasticsearch ingestion pipelines and search tuning for large datasets.
- Deep expertise in architecting and working within Service Oriented Architecture or microservices environments.
- Practical experience utilizing AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle, such as agentic tools including Cursor and Claude Code.
- Advanced knowledge in specific stack areas such as Next.js, React, Typescript, Node.js, Nest.js, TypeORM, PostgreSQL, Aurora, Kafka, Kubernetes, and Docker.
- Prior experience with e-commerce platforms and complex procurement or purchasing systems.
- Background in scientific procurement, life science research environments, or regulated laboratory workflows.
Practical notes
This role is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and operates as a hybrid onsite position requiring presence in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The engagement is full-time, and the compensation package includes a base salary range aligned with experience and market standards. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship for this position.
