About the role

As the Head of Legal at Bamboohr, you will play a role in overseeing the legal framework of the organization. This position requires a strategic thinker with a understanding of corporate law, compliance, and risk management. You will be responsible for ensuring that all legal practices align with the company's objectives while safeguarding its interests. Your expertise will guide the organization through complex legal landscapes, making you an essential part of the leadership team.

What you'll do

Lead the legal department, managing a team of legal professionals to ensure effective legal support across all business units.
Develop and implement legal strategies that align with Bamboohr' business objectives and mitigate potential risks.
Provide expert legal advice on a wide range of issues, including corporate governance, compliance, and contractual matters.
Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of contracts, ensuring that they protect the company's interests while fostering positive relationships with clients and partners.
Monitor and interpret changes in laws and regulations that may impact the business, advising senior management on necessary adjustments.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide legal insights during the development of new products and services.
Manage disputes and litigation, working with external counsel as necessary to protect the company's interests.
Conduct training sessions for employees on legal compliance and best practices to foster a culture of awareness and adherence to legal standards.
Oversee the management of intellectual property rights, ensuring that the company's innovations are adequately protected.
Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory bodies and external legal advisors to facilitate smooth operations.
Prepare and present legal reports to the executive team and board of directors, ensuring transparency and informed decision-making.
Stay abreast of industry trends and legal developments, continuously improving the legal function within the organization.

Requirements

A law degree from a recognized institution, with a valid practicing certificate.
At least 8 years of experience in a legal role, preferably within the financial services or technology sectors.
Proven experience in corporate law, compliance, and risk management.
Strong negotiation skills with a track record of successful contract management.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
Leadership experience, demonstrating the ability to manage and mentor a team effectively.
Familiarity with data protection laws and regulations, particularly in the context of financial services.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

Experience in the fintech sector or with financial institutions is highly desirable.
Knowledge of international law and cross-border transactions.
Previous experience in a startup or high-growth environment.
Proficiency in additional languages, which may be beneficial in a diverse workplace.
Membership in relevant legal associations or organizations.

Skills & tools

Proficient in legal research tools and software, such as LexisNexis or Westlaw.
Familiarity with contract management systems and compliance software.
Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Word and Excel for document preparation and analysis.
Experience with project management tools to oversee legal projects and initiatives.
Ability to communication tools effectively for team collaboration and reporting.

Practical notes

This position is based in Claremont, Western Cape, and may require occasional travel for meetings or conferences.
The role may involve working outside of standard business hours to meet project deadlines or address urgent legal matters.
