Senior Software Engineer, Applied AI

About the role

Justworks is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with a focus on Applied AI to join their growing team. This position is fully remote and open to qualified candidates located anywhere in the world. The engineer will take a hands-on role in designing, building, and improving artificial intelligence features that are embedded throughout the Justworks platform. You will partner with product, design, and engineering colleagues to deliver machine learning solutions that create meaningful value for customers.

What you'll do

1) Design and implement machine learning models that power AI features across the Justworks platform and its customer-facing products

2) Work closely with product managers and stakeholders to understand user needs and translate business requirements into technical specifications for AI solutions

3) Build and maintain data pipelines that prepare, clean, and process information for training models and running inference in production environments

4) Optimize existing AI models to improve accuracy, reduce latency, and ensure reliable performance when serving real-world requests at scale

5) Conduct rigorous experiments to evaluate new approaches, compare model architectures, and determine the most effective path forward for each feature

6) Write clean, well-structured code that supports the long-term maintainability and evolution of the AI systems within the codebase

7) Collaborate with other software engineers to integrate AI capabilities into the broader product architecture and ensure consistent engineering standards

8) Monitor model behavior in production, investigate anomalies, and respond to issues that arise during real-world usage and deployment

9) Document technical decisions, model performance metrics, and system design choices so that team members can understand and build upon the work

10) Stay informed about developments in the applied AI field and assess their relevance and potential impact on the Justworks product roadmap

Requirements

1) Demonstrated experience building, training, and deploying machine learning models in a production or production-like environment

2) Strong programming skills in at least one general-purpose language commonly used for AI and data engineering work

3) Solid understanding of core machine learning concepts including supervised learning, model evaluation, hyperparameter tuning, and inference optimization

4) Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects from initial conception through implementation and ongoing maintenance

5) Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, data scientists, and other engineers on shared goals

6) Familiarity with software engineering best practices such as version control, automated testing, code review, and continuous integration workflows

7) Comfort working in a remote-first environment with asynchronous communication across multiple time zones and distributed team structures

8) A bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related technical field

Nice to have

1) Experience with cloud platforms and their managed machine learning or artificial intelligence services for model training and deployment

2) Familiarity with containerization technologies and orchestration tools used for deploying models at scale in production settings

3) Background in natural language processing, computer vision, or another applied AI domain with real-world implementation experience

4) Contributions to open-source machine learning projects or published research in applied AI that demonstrates deep technical expertise
