About the role
Justworks is hiring a Senior Software Engineer focused on Applied AI to join their fully remote team. This role centers on building and improving artificial intelligence features that power the company's human resources and benefits platform. The engineer will work closely with product and data teams to deliver machine learning solutions that enhance the day to day experience for Justworks customers across multiple product areas. The successful candidate will take ownership of AI features from ideation through production, ensuring that models are reliable, fair, and aligned with customer needs and business objectives. The role reports to the engineering manager and collaborates with a team of data scientists and software engineers dedicated to advancing AI capabilities within the platform.

What you'll do
- Design and implement machine learning models that solve real problems for Justworks users
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to define AI requirements and success metrics
- Build data pipelines and feature stores to support model training and inference
- Evaluate model performance and iterate on approaches to improve accuracy and reliability
- Write clean, maintainable code for production AI systems that operate at scale
- Partner with product managers to translate business needs into technical specifications
- Conduct experiments and analyze results to guide the direction of applied AI work
- Optimize existing models for latency, cost, and scalability in production environments
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the technical culture of the team
- Stay current with advances in AI research and assess their applicability to Justworks products
- Document models and findings to ensure knowledge sharing and reproducibility across the organization
- Work with data engineering teams to ensure data quality and integrity for AI workloads
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience building and deploying machine learning models in production settings at scale
- Strong programming skills in Python or a comparable language for data intensive engineering work
- Familiarity with common AI frameworks and libraries used for model development and training
- Understanding of software engineering principles including testing, version control, code review, and documentation
- Ability to work independently and communicate technical ideas clearly to diverse stakeholders and partners
- Experience working with structured and unstructured data to derive actionable insights and recommendations
- A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field is required
- Comfort with remote collaboration and asynchronous communication across multiple time zones and regions
- Familiarity with REST APIs and building services that serve model predictions to end users
- Experience with monitoring and logging infrastructure to track model behavior and data drift in production

- Experience with large language models or generative AI techniques applied to business products and workflows
- Background in human resources technology or workplace benefits platforms and related domains
