Senior GL Accountant
Job description
About the role
This role owns holding-level accounting operations to keep global finance compliant and transparent. The position bridges corporate finance expectations with local statutory rules.
Finance teams manage money, forecasts, and reporting. Analysts build models and explain variance. Controllers run accounting and compliance. FP&A professionals support decisions with budgets and forecasts. The work is precise, deadline driven, and tied to business results. Finance teams follow tight calendars, with monthly closes and annual planning cycles. Accuracy and auditability are expected on every deliverable.
Key facts
What you'll do
Holding-level month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes are owned to ensure statutory compliance for group reporting. Holding entities receive prepared and reviewed statutory financial statements and supporting documentation. Local statutory accounting and Dutch reporting requirements are fully followed to protect the company's regulatory standing. Complex accounting matters are examined, key technical positions are recorded, and accounting policies are aligned across holding entities for consistent treatment. Intercompany balances are tracked, and intercompany accounting alignment and eliminations are led to keep group records clean and auditable.
Requirements
Five to seven years of progressive accounting experience with substantial exposure to holding-company accounting is required. Working knowledge of corporate income tax accounting and reporting supports compliance alongside internal tax teams or external advisors. Deep, practical knowledge of general ledger accounting, holding structures, and statutory reporting is demonstrated. A strong understanding of Dutch statutory compliance requirements and accounting principles is shown. Experience preparing or coordinating statutory financial statements for legal entities in an international environment is proven. Confidence operating within ERP-based systems such as NetSuite and managing complex spreadsheet analyses is needed. Fluency in English enables effective collaboration with global team members.
Practical notes
The role is based in Amsterdam under equal opportunity employment principles. Success in the first three months involves owning the first month-end close cycle for holding entities after learning the global holding structure and ERP setup. Long-term impact focuses on raising financial governance by standardizing holding-level accounting processes for transparency, automation, and scalability. Typical interview steps
Finance interviews usually include technical questions on accounting or modeling, a case study, and behavioral rounds. Candidates may be asked to build a forecast or explain a variance. Spreadsheet skills are tested in most loops. Accuracy and clear explanations matter. Interviewers may give a real dataset and ask for a quick analysis. Showing your work and explaining assumptions matters as much as the final number.
Good to know
Roles of this type typically involve high ownership of financial processes and strict regulatory compliance. General ledger accounting and holding structures require clear documentation and consistent policy application across entities. ERP systems like NetSuite are common platforms for managing complex financial operations at scale. Cross-functional collaboration with tax, treasury, and controlling is common for organizations with international operations.
Questions to ask
Useful questions for the interview: what a typical week looks like, how work is assigned, what tools the team uses, and how feedback works. Asking how the role has changed recently and what the team wishes it had known when joining is also reasonable. Questions about the manager's priorities are especially valued.
Career growth
Finance careers move from analyst to senior analyst, manager, and controller or FP&A director levels. Some people earn certifications such as CPA or CFA. Cross-functional work with operations and leadership grows with seniority. Finance careers reward precision early and business partnership later. Learning the operations of the company beyond the numbers accelerates growth.
