About the role
Instructure is seeking a skilled IT Systems Administrator to oversee the internal infrastructure that is vital for our product teams. This position entails ensuring the security, efficiency, and uptime of our essential systems while providing support for the development of our platforms, including Canvas, Mastery, and Parchment. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining the technological backbone of our organization.

What you'll do
- Oversee the administration of Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and Entra ID, managing user access and group settings to ensure seamless operations.
- Regularly monitor system performance and health, implementing consistent patching and endpoint management to maintain optimal functionality.
- Develop and execute data protection protocols, including routine backups and disaster recovery drills, while ensuring compliance with FERPA and other relevant educational privacy regulations.
- Offer technical assistance to teams working on Canvas, Mastery, and Parchment, addressing issues and providing solutions as needed.
- Create automation scripts using PowerShell or similar scripting languages to streamline processes and reduce manual intervention.
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network challenges, ensuring that all technical documentation is kept up to date and accurate.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance system performance and security measures.
- Stay informed about the latest trends and best practices in system administration and educational technology to continually improve our infrastructure.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss ongoing projects, challenges, and solutions, fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Assist in the onboarding of new employees by setting up their accounts and providing necessary training on internal systems.
- Contribute to the development of policies and procedures related to IT security and system management.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in enterprise-level system and network administration.
- Demonstrated expertise with Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and Entra ID, including user management and security configurations.
- Solid understanding of virtualization technologies, backup and disaster recovery processes, and endpoint management strategies.
- Proficient in writing automation scripts using PowerShell or Bash to enhance operational efficiency.
- Familiarity with data security and privacy regulations, particularly within the education technology landscape.
- Excellent documentation skills and the ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
Nice to have
- Experience working in a SaaS or software development environment, particularly in the educational technology sector.
- Knowledge of the Canvas, Mastery, or Parchment platforms and their functionalities.
- Relevant professional certifications from recognized organizations such as Microsoft, CompTIA, or VMware.
- Experience with cloud service providers like Azure or AWS, enhancing our cloud infrastructure capabilities.
- An associate degree or higher in information systems, computer science, or a related discipline.
