Senior Software Engineer - Quality Engineering
Job description
Senior Software Engineer - Quality Engineering at ID.me.
About the role
You will own the architecture and reliability of the automation frameworks and testing infrastructure that give ID.me engineering teams the confidence to ship quickly and safely. You will design and build tooling for functional, end-to-end, and security-focused test automation, extending testing coverage into production through canary releases and progressive delivery. You will champion AI-assisted testing practices across the engineering organization and serve as a testing strategist for cross-functional partners. You will work closely with engineering, product, and security teams to raise the bar on quality and resilience for a platform that verifies the identity of millions of users. You will debug and root-cause issues across frontend, backend, APIs, and distributed services, driving fixes to closure. You will define and track reliability metrics for the systems you test and integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to give teams fast, reliable feedback.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design, build, and maintain automation frameworks (Playwright, Python, Jest, API automation) that provide comprehensive, reliable test coverage across ID.me's services.
Develop end-to-end and integration testing strategies for complex, asynchronous, event-driven, and eventually-consistent systems, including workflow orchestration platforms such as Temporal.
Build and champion testing-in-production practices - canary deployments, progressive/phased rollouts, synthetic monitoring, and automated rollback triggers - to validate real-world behavior safely before full release.
Own security-focused test automation covering authentication/authorization flows (OAuth 2.0, OIDC), RBAC/ReBAC, secrets management, and tenant isolation.
Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions) to give teams fast, reliable feedback.
Apply AI tools to accelerate test authoring, test plan generation, and code review - modeling AI-first engineering practices for the team and helping less-technical stakeholders adopt AI safely.
Partner with development teams as a testing strategist, advising on testable code structure, coverage gaps, and quality checks throughout the development lifecycle.
Debug and root-cause issues across frontend, backend, APIs, and distributed services, and drive fixes to closure.
Define and track reliability metrics (e.g., time to detect, time to remediate) for the systems you test.
Requirements
8+ years of experience (or equivalent: 6+ years with a Master's degree, or a PhD with 3+ years) as a software engineer in modern web applications and distributed systems.
Experience architecting and maintaining large-scale test automation frameworks that are reliable, maintainable, and fast.
Strong proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and modern testing tools such as Playwright, Jest, and API testing frameworks.
Experience designing and executing testing strategies for asynchronous, event-driven, and eventually-consistent systems, including familiarity with workflow orchestration platforms like Temporal.
Proven ability to build and operationalize testing-in-production practices, including canary releases, progressive rollouts, synthetic monitoring, and automated rollback mechanisms.
Deep understanding of authentication and authorization flows (OAuth 2.0, OIDC), role-based and attribute-based access controls, secrets management, and multi-tenant isolation concepts.
Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, with a track record of enabling fast, reliable feedback for engineering teams.
Comfortable applying AI tools to accelerate test authoring, test plan generation, and code review while maintaining rigorous standards for accuracy and security.
Practical notes
ID.me is a full-time, in-office culture. Unless a specific job description explicitly states otherwise, all roles are on-site five days per week at one of our offices in McLean, VA; Mountain View, CA; New York City, NY; or Tampa, FL. Certain roles - such as field-based sales or other remote-by-design positions - may have different work arrangements as noted in their individual postings.
At ID.me, we embrace the thoughtful use of AI tools in our daily work and there are even occasions where we leverage AI in our hiring process. However, during the interview process, we want to understand your individual skills and experiences. Therefore, we have guidelines on how AI can be appropriately used during your application and interviews which can be found here.
