Sales Engineer
Job description
Sales Engineer - Chemical Engineering at Hirehangar.
About the role
Custom foam manufacturers address medical, aerospace, automotive, industrial, and electronics markets by converting customer requirements into manufacturable solutions. Chemical engineers partner with manufacturing and estimating teams to define buildable solutions while managing and growing key accounts.
Software engineers turn product ideas into working code. Engineers work in small teams, review each other's work, and ship in small batches. Most teams follow agile practices such as sprints and daily standups. Engineers also write tests, fix bugs, and improve performance. The field values clear communication as much as technical skill. Engineers spend part of every week on planning, code review, and debugging, not just writing new code. The ability to explain a technical decision in plain words separates strong engineers from the rest.
Key facts
What you'll do
Manufacturable solutions are defined through collaboration with manufacturing and estimating teams, and these solutions grow key customer accounts.
Inbound leads and proactive outreach generate new sales opportunities, which are then pursued directly.
Customer requirements are translated into accurate quotes and solutions through cross-functional collaboration with engineering, estimating, manufacturing, and customer service.
Accounts, pipeline activity, and customer interactions are recorded accurately to track progress.
Foam materials, applications, and industry trends are tracked to keep solutions relevant.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or a closely related technical field is required for this on-site role.
Ambiguous customer requirements are handled to reach clear, manufacturable outcomes using strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Direct customer interaction is enjoyed, and trust is built naturally through strong listening and communication skills.
Technical concepts are translated for non-technical audiences without loss of accuracy.
Multiple priorities are managed simultaneously by organized, self-motivated individuals.
Full-time on-site work at Barberton, Ohio or Sylacauga, Alabama is required.
Nice to have
Experience in a technical sales, application engineering, or customer-facing engineering role is preferred for success.
Familiarity with polyurethane foam, polymer science, or materials chemistry in applied settings enhances effectiveness.
Experience working at a small to mid-size manufacturer is advantageous for navigating the environment.
Background in medical, aerospace, automotive, or industrial manufacturing markets provides relevant context.
Skills & tools
Technical problem-solving, customer communication, and cross-functional collaboration are central to the work.
Practical notes
This is an on-site role in Barberton, Ohio or Sylacauga, Alabama with full-time hours.
Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down an unfamiliar problem, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Career growth
Engineering careers usually progress from individual contributor to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some engineers move into management and lead teams of five to twenty people. Others stay on the technical track. Growth follows demonstrated impact, not tenure alone. A typical engineering ladder has clear levels with defined expectations for scope, quality, and mentorship. Moving up usually requires owning outcomes end to end rather than completing assigned tickets.
Questions to ask
Worth asking in any interview: how the team measures success, who the role works with daily, what the onboarding looks like, and what the company is trying to achieve this year. Asking what past hires did well is a strong final question. Keep the list short and pick the questions that matter most to you.
