About the role
You will own the end-to-end revenue recognition process for the Gusto Retirement segment, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with ASC 606. This role requires you to prepare detailed journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules that underpin our retirement revenue streams. You will partner cross-functionally with Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Product teams to maintain financial integrity as we scale new offerings. You are expected to actively engage with AI tools relevant to your role to build automation and streamline repetitive accounting tasks. The position offers the opportunity to shape modern accounting processes and raise the bar on efficiency and accuracy. Key facts
What you'll do
- Own end-to-end revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment (401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, plan administration).
- Prepare monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules for retirement revenue streams.
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close within established timelines.
- Apply ASC 606 guidance to complex arrangements including variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal vs. agent assessments.
- Build and maintain automated solutions using AI tools, Python/SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual work.
- Identify and implement process improvements across the revenue close, reducing cycle time and increasing accuracy.
- Partner with auditors during annual audits - lead walkthroughs, provide documentation, and respond to inquiries.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Retirement Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Data teams on revenue data integrity and new product launches.
- Maintain detailed documentation of accounting policies, processes, and controls for revenue recognition.
- Partner with FP&A on forecasting and analysis related to retirement revenue trends and product growth.
- Contribute to the design of internal controls to ensure the accuracy and completeness of revenue data.
- Support ad hoc analyses and special projects requested by leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Utilize data analytics to investigate variances and drive improvements in the revenue close process.
- Stay current with evolving accounting standards and best practices relevant to subscription and SaaS revenue models.
- Participate in continuous learning and improvement initiatives focused on AI enablement and automation within the revenue accounting function.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA preferred (active or in progress).
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue accounting.
- Strong knowledge of ASC 606 applied to SaaS, subscription, or fee-based models.
- Proven track record building automation - scripts, tools, or workflows - that reduced manual effort (you can speak to these concretely).
- Advanced Excel skills; Python or SQL a strong plus.
- NetSuite or revenue subledger experience a plus.
- Big 4 or public accounting background preferred; fintech or financial services experience a bonus.
- Comfortable with a fast-paced, dynamic environment where priorities can shift quickly.
- Strong attention to detail and high standards for accuracy and timeliness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet firm deadlines in a deadline-driven environment.
