Senior Platform Engineer
Job description
About the role
The owns the design and execution of the platform layer that empowers engineering teams. You will architect and maintain the golden paths and self-service templates that abstract the complexity of cloud infrastructure. This role focuses on transforming the underlying AWS, Kubernetes, and Argo CD foundation into an intuitive product for grid operations engineers. You will ensure that the platform enforces security and compliance without sacrificing developer velocity or grid-specific requirements. Success in this position is defined by how seamlessly and reliably other engineers can build and deploy critical grid software. You will be a founding member of the platform team, shaping long-term technical strategy and driving standardization across the company. Your daily work will directly support the monitoring and response capabilities that strengthen the reliability and safety of the electrical grid.
Key facts
What you'll do
Establish golden templates to accelerate the setup of new services across AWS and Kubernetes clusters while adhering to grid operations standards.
Automate self-service tooling to allow engineering teams to request environments and configurations without manual intervention or bottlenecks.
Guide workflow design to ensure every developer task aligns with the strict reliability, safety, and environmental monitoring requirements of active grid response.
Integrate platform capabilities through Argo CD pipelines, embedding strict security and compliance controls from the initial design phase.
Review platform usage metrics and feedback to identify friction points and streamline the experience for multiple concurrent engineering teams.
Coordinate closely with DevOps and Cloud Security engineers to embed necessary controls into deployment workflows without impeding rapid iteration.
Ship iterative improvements to the platform that reduce manual steps and increase confidence in production changes for grid infrastructure.
Partner with external collaborators and internal stakeholders to ensure integrations meet the rigorous expectations of grid operations and regulatory standards.
Maintain the foundational layer of abstractions that allows engineering teams to focus exclusively on building grid monitoring and response features.
Champion the platform as a product, advocating for usability, reliability, and continuous enhancement based on real-world engineering needs.
Drive adoption of the platform across the engineering organization by demonstrating its value in accelerating safe and reliable software delivery.
Ensure all platform tooling supports the high-precision sensor data and fault mitigation workflows central to the company's active grid response mission.
Promote best practices for infrastructure as code, version control, and deployment pipelines to maintain consistency and resilience.
Act as a technical leader who balances innovation with the stringent safety and uptime demands of modern electrical grid management.
Requirements
You must possess experience with AWS services including compute, storage, and networking within a production environment.
Kubernetes administration in production settings is a hard requirement for managing containerized grid applications and services.
Demonstrated skill with Argo CD and GitOps workflows is necessary to manage safe, auditable, and reliable software releases.
You must have three or more years of experience building platforms or internal tools specifically for software engineering teams.
An understanding of grid operations, reliability constraints, and safety considerations is essential for building appropriate platform guardrails.
You must be proficient in infrastructure as code methodologies and tools to ensure all platform configurations are versioned and reproducible.
Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation is required to support continuous delivery in a regulated industry.
You must have a proven track record of collaborating with security teams to implement and enforce controls within the software supply chain.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to open source projects related to distributed systems and infrastructure is a plus.
Practical Notes
Please What you'll do
Gridware is a San Francisco-based technology company dedicated to protecting and enhancing the electrical grid. We pioneered a groundbreaking new class of grid management called active grid response (AGR), focused on monitoring the electrical, physical, and environmental aspects of the grid that affect reliability and safety.
