What you'll do
- Conduct geotechnical investigations and assessments to evaluate soil and rock properties for various projects, including commercial, residential, and municipal developments.
- Analyze and interpret geotechnical data to prepare detailed reports that inform design and construction practices.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, environmental scientists, and project managers, to integrate geotechnical findings into overall project plans.
- Design and oversee field testing programs, including standard penetration tests, cone penetration tests, and laboratory testing of soil samples.
- Provide technical guidance and support during the construction phase, ensuring compliance with geotechnical specifications and standards.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical services, contributing to business development efforts.
- Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices in geotechnical engineering to enhance the quality of our services.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
- Participate in site visits and inspections to monitor construction activities and address any geotechnical issues that arise.
- Prepare and present findings to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies, ensuring clear communication of complex technical information.
- Utilize advanced software tools for geotechnical analysis and modeling, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of project deliverables.
- Contribute to the development of internal standards and procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of geotechnical services.
Requirements
- A degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, preferably in a consulting environment.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration in Ontario.
- Strong understanding of geotechnical principles, soil mechanics, and foundation design.
- Proficiency in geotechnical software such as PLAXIS, GeoStudio, or similar tools.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable recommendations.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Nice to have
- Experience with environmental assessments and remediation projects.
- Familiarity with construction methods and materials relevant to geotechnical engineering.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulations in the geotechnical field.
- Previous experience in project management or leading small teams.
- Membership in professional organizations such as the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) or similar.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for report writing and data analysis.
- Experience with CAD software for drafting and design purposes.
- Familiarity with GIS tools for spatial analysis and data visualization.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring high-quality deliverables.
- Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and work under tight deadlines.
