About the role
You will partner with leading companies to translate demanding safety requirements into robust embedded software for autonomous robot systems. A core part of this role involves owning the architectural design and implementation of complex, safety-critical features from initial concept through deployment. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining novel robotic systems that meet rigorous certification standards. This position requires you to work directly with the client to align technical solutions with business and operational goals. You will collaborate on a cross-functional team to find innovative solutions to challenging problems in dynamic environments. The role involves delivering solutions that consistently balance high performance with absolute reliability. You will come up to speed rapidly on diverse system components such as networking, security, navigation, obstacle detection, motor control, and safety-related sensors.

What you'll do
Investigate and integrate heterogeneous hardware modules to form a cohesive autonomous robotic platform.
Perform detailed architectural design in conjunction with the client to define system boundaries, interfaces, and safety strategies.
Orchestrate solutions with cross-functional team members to resolve complex technical challenges under tight schedules.
Optimize subsystem performance while preserving deterministic behavior and high reliability in demanding environments.
Achieve proficiency across a broad stack including networking, security, navigation, obstacle detection, motor control, and safety-related sensors.
Operate effectively with minimal supervision by interpreting technical direction and executing on sophisticated embedded tasks.
Utilize AI tooling to accelerate development cycles and enhance the robustness of unit testing and validation efforts.
Create and maintain diagnostics, test code, and utilities to support rigorous safety certification activities.
Contribute to documentation artifacts and coordinate with colleagues on field testing activities to validate real-world behavior.
Apply systematic verification methods to confirm that implemented features adhere to functional safety requirements.
Adapt quickly to shifting priorities while maintaining meticulous attention to code quality and system integrity.
Support the end-to-end delivery of safety-critical features from initial concept through certification and field deployment.
Engage in code reviews and knowledge sharing sessions to elevate the overall quality of the software base.
Assist in troubleshooting field issues and feeding learnings back into the design for continuous improvement.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics or related discipline preferred, or equivalent years of experience.
5+ years experience designing, developing, and testing production-level embedded software in C++ and/or Rust for safety critical systems.
Understanding of real-time concepts, thread synchronization, memory management, and performance tuning on Linux.
Proficiency with Linux, including device drivers, multicore systems, and real-time Linux.
Proficiency with real-time operating systems (RTOS).
Experience with modern SDLC processes including unit testing, static analysis, CI/CD, and robust change management.
Knowledge of microcontroller programming and hardware interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN.
Understanding of memory constraints and optimization techniques for resource-limited environments.
Familiarity with modern software development tools including Git, SVN, or other industry-standard source control systems.
Experience using Agile techniques, with comfort in task and issue tracking through JIRA or similar systems.
Demonstrated commitment to high quality through meticulous code reviews and rigorous validation practices.
Strong oral and written communication skills for effective collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Highly motivated, self-disciplined, independent and results oriented mindset to drive projects to completion.
Ability to interpret complex technical documents and translate them into reliable software components.
Readiness to maintain and extend existing codebases in a professional and sustainable manner.
Nice to have
Experience with industrial safety standards, particularly IEC 61508, and designing software for functional safety.
Hands-on experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), particularly FreeRTOS.
Knowledge of industrial communication protocols including EtherCAT, SPI, and RS485.
Experience with networking, wireless communications (802.11/WiFi), and data security measures.
Experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code) to generate reliable production code and automated tests.
Robotics systems experience in warehouse or logistics environments.

The role is based in Westborough, MA.
This is a full-time position.
