About the role
You will architect and own the end-to-end radiation safety framework for the SourceLight program, establishing the governance, procedures, and documentation that define how safety is managed across the full lifecycle of our LDRS systems. You will design and validate the radiation shielding for our facilities, ensuring that complex, high-energy laser-driven sources are contained within rigorously controlled and compliant environments. You will define, implement, and maintain the radiation monitoring and dosimetry strategy, integrating these systems with building controls and access infrastructure to enforce safety and operational readiness. You will own the integration of radiation protection systems with controls and building infrastructure, ensuring that safety interlocks and automated responses function reliably in real-world conditions. You will own radiation safety documentation and licensing submissions, acting as the primary interface with regulatory authorities and ensuring that all technical and procedural requirements are met. You will conduct or supervise radiation measurements during commissioning and operation, collecting and analyzing data to verify that designs perform as intended and remain within strict safety limits. You will act as the functional Radiation Safety Officer, leading audits, investigations, and continuous improvement activities related to radiation safety performance. You will lead radiation safety input into design reviews, commissioning reviews, operational readiness reviews, and change processes, ensuring that safety considerations are embedded from concept through deployment.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Establish the radiation safety governance model, defining roles, responsibilities, procedures, documentation standards, review processes, and escalation paths for SourceLight and future LDRS products.
- Perform radiation shielding design and verification for LDRS facilities, specifying materials, geometries, and configurations using physics-based analyses and practical engineering constraints.
- Conduct shielding, dose, and activation analyses using Monte Carlo methods such as MCNP, FLUKA, GEANT4, and PHITS to predict radiation fields and optimize protection strategies.
- Define, implement, and maintain radiation monitoring and dosimetry systems, including area and personal dosimetry, real-time alarms, and data logging for ongoing safety assurance.
- Integrate radiation protection systems with building controls, safety interlocks, access control systems, and infrastructure to ensure coordinated, automated safety responses.
- Own the preparation of radiation safety documentation, including licensing submissions, safety analyses reports, operating procedures, and compliance records for regulatory review.
- Conduct or supervise radiation measurements, surveys, and dose rate mapping during commissioning and operation to validate models and ensure adherence to limits.
- Act as the Radiation Safety Officer or support this role, leading audits, incident investigations, and corrective and preventive actions to sustain a robust safety culture.
- Lead radiation safety inputs into design reviews, commissioning reviews, operational readiness reviews, and change management processes to embed safety into technical decisions.
- Serve as the functional owner and trusted authority for all radiation safety topics within the SourceLight and LDRS programs, aligning engineering, operations, and regulatory expectations.
- Communicate radiation risks and safety implications clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including management, customers, and regulatory bodies.
- Demonstrate a proactive, solution-oriented, and collaborative working style that balances technical rigor with operational practicality to advance project timelines without compromising safety.
- Connect technical depth with operational realism by translating complex radiation safety concepts into actionable requirements and fieldable solutions.
- Ensure that all activities align with strong ALARA principles, employing radiation measurement techniques and data analysis to drive continuous improvement in dose management.
- Represent the safety interests of the organization in discussions with authorities, customers, and cross-functional teams to maintain trust and ensure compliance.
Requirements
- Demonstrate strong expertise in radiation protection, shielding, and dosimetry, with a background in environments involving pulsed neutrons, medical or industrial radiation facilities, accelerator-like systems, high-energy physics facilities, X-ray systems, neutron or gamma radiation environments, or other comparable regulated technical settings.
- Apply experience with shielding, dose, and activation analyses using Monte Carlo tools such as MCNP, FLUKA, GEANT4, and PHITS to model radiation transport and predict dose distributions in complex geometries.
- Apply experience with shielding design, dose estimation, radiation monitoring, access control, controlled areas, safety interlocks, commissioning activities, and operating procedures to ensure that facilities are safe, compliant, and reliable.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of radiation protection principles, regulatory requirements, documentation standards, and authority-facing communication, including the ability to prepare technically sound submissions and respond to regulatory queries.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of control systems and safety interlocks, including how these systems are implemented and validated in high-risk radiation environments.
- Demonstrate a solid grounding in ALARA principles and radiation measurement techniques, including the use of survey instruments, dosimetry records, and data interpretation to manage and minimize exposure.
- Communicate effectively with regulation authorities in German, providing clear, accurate, and technically sound information regarding safety analyses, compliance, and facility operations.
