We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Research Associate specializing in histopathology to join our dedicated Histology team at Flagship Pioneering. This position offers an to work within a biotech environment, collaborating closely with scientists to advance our somatic genomics platform. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting detailed pathological evaluations of human tissue samples from a variety of disease contexts, ensuring the highest standards of tissue preparation, processing, and workflow management. This role involves applying technical expertise to support molecular profiling efforts, microdissection, and downstream analysis, all while maintaining strict adherence to regulatory standards and quality protocols. What you'll do
- Conduct comprehensive histopathological evaluations of human tissue samples, focusing on tissues relevant to disease studies such as gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and other disease-related tissues.
- Assist in interpreting tissue morphology and pathology to identify disease-relevant areas, ensuring accurate annotation and documentation for downstream molecular analyses.
- Evaluate the quality of tissue samples to determine their suitability for specific workflows, including microdissection, nucleic acid extraction, and sequencing.
- Perform precise tissue dissection, embedding, sectioning, and staining procedures, including hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and immunofluorescence (IF).
- Review histology slides and tissue-based assay data, providing insights and interpretations to inform scientific decisions and experimental designs.
- Collaborate with scientists and other laboratory staff to optimize tissue processing protocols, troubleshoot technical issues, and develop new histological techniques to improve workflow efficiency.
- Handle human tissue samples with care, ensuring proper labeling, tracking, and traceability throughout all laboratory procedures in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Maintain detailed records of all histological procedures, sample metadata, and assay results within laboratory information management systems, preferably Benchling.
- Ensure laboratory practices align with regulatory requirements, including the Human Tissue Act, COSHH regulations, and other relevant guidelines.
- Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing reproducibility, reducing turnaround times, and enhancing overall laboratory efficiency.
- Contribute to the development and validation of new histology assays, including optimizing staining protocols and assay parameters for better sensitivity and specificity.
- Support training and mentorship of junior staff or new team members, sharing expertise in histological techniques and tissue handling.
- Stay current with advances in histopathology, digital pathology, and related fields, integrating new methods and technologies into laboratory workflows as appropriate.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical science, or a closely related discipline.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience working in a histopathology laboratory setting, whether in biotech, academic research, or the NHS.
- Proven hands-on experience with histology techniques, including tissue dissection, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
- Strong knowledge of tissue-based assays such as IHC, IF, and specialized staining methods.
- Experience in evaluating tissue quality and morphology, with the ability to interpret histology slides accurately.
- Familiarity with digital pathology workflows and image analysis software is advantageous.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and optimize protocols to improve assay performance.
- Excellent organizational skills, with attention to detail and record-keeping.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards, including the Human Tissue Act, and experience working under such frameworks.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively share findings and collaborate with team members.
- Experience with laboratory information management systems, preferably Benchling, is desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality, reproducibility, and continuous improvement in laboratory practices.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with digital pathology and image analysis tools for quantifying histological features.
- Experience working in a high-throughput laboratory environment with large sample volumes.
- Knowledge of automated histology equipment and laboratory automation systems.
- Background in molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, or NGS library preparation.
- Experience with laser capture microdissection to isolate specific tissue regions for molecular analysis.
- Understanding of ITAR regulations related to handling sensitive biological materials.
