Senior Automation Engineer, Platform Biology
Job description
About the role
Senior Automation Engineer, Platform Biology
Role Purpose
Vesalius Therapeutics seeks an Automation Engineer to construct the programmable foundation of human cellular biology. In this position, you will convert complex biological protocols into robust, scalable automation workflows. Your work will directly enable the generation of reliable, analysis-ready data for therapeutic discovery. This is an early-career role where your contributions will impact how biology is engineered at scale.
About Vesalius Therapeutics
Vesalius Therapeutics was founded in 2019 by Flagship Pioneering to create treatments for common diseases. Our platform integrates large-scale human genetics, genomics, stem cell studies, high-dimensional phenotyping, and artificial intelligence. The goal is to identify causal biology and intervention points previously inaccessible to traditional discovery.
Location and Compensation
-
Location: Cambridge
-
Engagement: Full-time
-
Compensation: $130,000.00 USD
Key Responsibilities
You will serve as the critical link between scientific ambition and automated execution. Your daily work will involve translating abstract biological concepts into concrete, programmable workcells.
- Design and develop high-throughput automated protocols that move from benchtop concepts to integrated experimental systems.
- Architect integrations that connect instruments, data management systems, and analysis pipelines while enforcing strict metadata standards.
- Build and maintain software frameworks using Python and C# to control liquid handling and complex robotic workcells.
- Validate automated methods by comparing them to manual benchtop protocols, ensuring precision, accuracy, and reproducibility.
- Partner with laboratory operators to transform biological protocols into reliable, error-aware, and scalable workflows.
- Optimize scheduling, monitoring, and error handling to ship analysis-ready datasets efficiently.
- Support the integration and troubleshooting of new instruments and workcell components.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation, including SOPs, method descriptions, and validation reports.
- Develop barcode-to-workflow mapping systems to enable comprehensive sample tracking and batch management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, bioengineering, computational biology, or a related field.
- Early career experience in laboratory automation, scientific software, or a related biotech environment.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot issues across software, hardware, liquid handling, and sample-tracking workflows.
- Programming proficiency in Python and/or C#, with experience in version control, testing, and documentation.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with scientists, automation specialists, IT, and data teams.
- Experience with biological workflows such as mammalian cell culture, cell-based assays, or high-throughput screening is strongly preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to cloud infrastructure, event-driven integrations, or data pipelines designed for laboratory environments.
- Experience with a wide range of laboratory automation platforms and vendor-specific languages.
