About the role
The Financial Times seeks a Data Reporter or Senior Data Reporter to join its specialist data journalism team, where you will own the full lifecycle of data-driven storytelling for FundFire and Financial Advisor IQ. You will conceive, commission, and execute original investigations that expose hidden trends and risks in institutional investing and wealth management. You will translate complex quantitative findings into clear, compelling narratives that strengthen the FT's authority on financial advisory markets. You will collaborate with reporters, editors, and designers to ensure every dataset, chart, and interactive element serves the story and the reader. You will continuously experiment with new tools, techniques, and partnerships to keep the FT's data journalism at the forefront of the industry. You will mentor colleagues and elevate data literacy across the newsroom while maintaining rigorous standards of accuracy and transparency. Your work will directly inform public understanding of the financial system and influence strategic conversations among industry leaders.

What you'll do
Lead the sourcing, cleaning, and analysis of structured and unstructured datasets to uncover original stories in institutional investing, wealth management, and financial advisory.
Employ advanced data techniques in Python or R to acquire, transform, and model data, ensuring robustness, reproducibility, and clarity of insight.
Design and build interactive visualisations, charts, and graphics using tools such as Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and D3 to elevate storytelling and audience engagement.
Leverage public records, databases, APIs, and web scraping techniques to identify trends, anomalies, and exclusive reporting opportunities.
Run long-term investigative projects and shorter-turnaround assignments, balancing deep analytical work with rapid response to emerging news.
Collaborate closely with reporters, editors, and visual journalists across FundFire and Financial Advisor IQ to align data work with editorial priorities.
Apply data journalism procedures and interpret quantitative information accurately, ensuring all outputs meet the highest standards of precision and context.
Champion the use of diverse data sources, including proprietary datasets, to surface stories that are not accessible through conventional reporting.
Support colleagues in understanding and using data tools and methods, fostering a culture of shared learning and rigorous evidence-based journalism.
Contribute to the ongoing development of data journalism capabilities across FT Specialist by sharing techniques, documenting workflows, and mentoring team members.
Requirements
Demonstrated experience producing data-driven journalism, business reporting, or analytical storytelling in a newsroom or comparable environment.
Strong interest in data journalism, visual storytelling, and financial or business news, with a proven track record of identifying and communicating compelling stories through data.
Experience using Python or R for data acquisition, cleaning, analysis, and reporting, with a portfolio that showcases your technical work.
Strong proficiency with Excel and other data analysis tools, including statistical techniques and data management practices.
Experience working with APIs, databases, and web scraping techniques to gather and verify information at scale.
Knowledge of data visualisation standard processes and experience using tools such as Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, D3, or comparable front-end technologies.
Exceptional attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to accuracy, transparency, and journalistic integrity in every dataset and story.
Ability to translate complex quantitative findings into clear and engaging journalism for non-technical audiences without losing nuance or rigor.
Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills, with the capacity to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
Experience working successfully within cross-functional teams and time-sensitive environments, adapting quickly to shifting news cycles and editorial needs.
Practical notes
This role is part of the FT Specialist US Guild and covered under a collective bargaining agreement with the Writers' Guild of America East.
A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $75,000-$95,000 in the NYC office, with the upper end reflecting senior reporter level experience and confirmed work.
The role operates under a 50% hybrid working model, averaging two to three days onsite, to foster trust, remote adaptability, and in-person collaboration.
