About the role
Figma is seeking engineers to build and maintain the systems that allow teams to collaborate in real time. You will work across the stack to develop features that support millions of users, ranging from startups to large enterprises. In this role, you will own the end-to-end delivery of critical features that power the core collaborative experiences designers and teams rely on every day. You will be responsible for designing systems that balance performance, consistency, and reliability at scale. You will translate ambiguous product goals into robust technical solutions while maintaining a high standard of code quality. You will contribute to discussions that shape architecture, trade-offs, and long-term platform strategy. This position requires a proactive mindset to identify opportunities for improvement and drive them through to execution. You will play a key role in ensuring that the tools Figma builds today remain fast, secure, and dependable for a global user base.

What you'll do
- Develop and deploy features spanning from front-end interfaces to back-end infrastructure.
- Manage projects from initial concept and technical design through to launch and ongoing iteration.
- Partner with Product, Design, Research, and Data teams to determine product strategy.
- Maintain the reliability, security, and scalability of the systems you build.
- Support team growth by mentoring colleagues, conducting code reviews, and participating in design discussions.
- Implement solutions that enable real-time collaboration for millions of concurrent users across different device types.
- Optimize application performance to ensure responsive interactions even under complex workloads.
- Integrate with third-party platforms to extend capabilities and streamline workflows for users.
- Build tooling that improves developer velocity and reduces friction in the development lifecycle.
- Contribute to the evolution of platform components used by multiple product teams across the organization.
- Analyze production data to inform decisions that enhance stability, usability, and feature adoption.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to clarify requirements and define technical approaches.
- Ensure that systems comply with security standards and data protection best practices.
- Iterate on existing codebases to refactor technical debt and improve long-term maintainability.
- Communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
- Proven history of shipping and supporting full-stack applications in production environments.
- Proficiency in modern front-end frameworks such as React and TypeScript.
- Experience with back-end technologies including Ruby, Python, Go, C++, or PostgreSQL.
- Ability to translate user requirements into technical solutions.
- Strong communication skills and experience working in cross-functional settings.
- Demonstrated experience in maintaining systems that require high availability and reliability.
- Comfort working in fast-paced environments where priorities can change based on user needs and business goals.
- Understanding of software development best practices including testing, version control, and code review.
- Willingness to engage deeply with product and design teams to explore constraints and opportunities.
- Capability to mentor other engineers and contribute to technical discussions that influence platform direction.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI-assisted coding tools like GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude.
- Familiarity with C++ and WebAssembly in client-facing software.
- Background in growth engineering, developer tooling, billing and payments, or extensibility platforms like plugins and APIs.
- Exposure to Stripe, Salesforce, Snowflake, SCIM, SAML, or observability and experimentation tools.
- Experience leading large-scale projects or launching products from zero to one.
