Senior Electrical Design Engineer
Job description
About the role
This role focuses on the development of defense electronics where precise electrical architectures define system capability. You will translate complex operational requirements into robust schematics and layouts that survive rigorous testing and field deployment. The position demands meticulous attention to environmental hardening and electromagnetic behavior under stress. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet stringent regulatory and military standards. The work involves both simulation and validation to de-risk technology before production. Clear documentation and design rationale will be essential for traceability and audit. You will own critical decisions that impact reliability, safety, and performance margins. Your contributions will directly affect the readiness and capabilities of systems used in demanding environments.
Key facts
What you'll do
Architect and evolve high-density circuit boards that satisfy severe thermal and vibration constraints imposed by defense applications.
Develop schematics and layouts for mixed-signal modules, ensuring signal integrity, power integrity, and compliance with military environmental robustness (MIL-STD-810) and electromagnetic compatibility (MIL-STD-461) standards.
Perform analysis of power distribution networks, grounding strategies, and transient suppression to meet platform-specific electromagnetic resilience targets.
Collaborate with mechanical and software teams to coordinate component placement, connector routing, and interface definitions under strict schedule pressures.
Interpret system-level requirements, decompose them into electrical specifications, and validate prototypes through measurement and test.
Support design for testability features, in-circuit diagnostics, and built-in test equipment to enable rapid troubleshooting in the field.
Evaluate emerging components and technologies, assessing risk and performance trade-offs for adoption in defense electronics portfolios.
Document design decisions, failure modes, and mitigation plans in compliance with defense engineering processes and quality systems.
Partner with verification engineers to develop test procedures that prove adherence to environmental, safety, and regulatory criteria.
Mentor junior engineers by providing code and design reviews, technical guidance, and constructive feedback aligned with team standards.
Contribute to standards and best practices, improving reuse of proven circuits, templates, and reference implementations across programs.
Engage in technical trade studies, balancing cost, schedule, performance, and risk to deliver solutions that meet customer operational needs.
Requirements
Demonstrated experience designing electronic hardware for defense, aerospace, or mission-critical industrial environments.
Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools used in high-reliability contexts, including signal integrity and power integrity analysis.
Strong understanding of analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit principles, including low-noise design, filtering, and shielding techniques.
Knowledge of military and defense standards such as MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, and related compliance and verification practices.
Proven ability to work from ambiguous requirements, defining electrical parameters and acceptance criteria with stakeholders.
Experience with requirement tracking, design reviews, and configuration management in regulated development environments.
Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of explaining technical trade-offs to both engineering and non-technical audiences.
Commitment to safety, quality, and process adherence, with a track record of delivering reliable solutions on schedule.
Nice to have
Certification as Certified SolidWorks Professional Electrical (CSWP-E) is preferred.
Practical notes
Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down an unfamiliar problem, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Good to know
The field involves defense electronics and compliance with strict environmental and electromagnetic standards. Common tools include CAD and PCB design software for hardware development. Roles in this area emphasize rapid growth and direct impact on product and process decisions.
Questions to ask
Useful questions for the interview: what a typical week looks like, how work is assigned, what tools the team uses, and how feedback works. Asking how the role has changed recently and what the team wishes it had known when joining is also reasonable. Questions about the manager's priorities are especially valued.
Career growth
Engineering careers usually progress from individual contributor to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some engineers move into management and lead teams of five to twenty people. Others stay on the technical track. Growth follows demonstrated impact, not tenure alone. A typical engineering ladder has clear levels with defined expectations for scope, quality, and mentorship. Moving up usually requires owning outcomes end to end rather than completing assigned tickets.
About the company
