Staff Software Engineer, Monetization Platform

About the role

You will own the design and evolution of the core billing systems that translate product usage, subscriptions, credits, and contracts into accurate customer outcomes and clean financial operations at Drata. You will architect the ingestion and processing of usage events, define billable metrics, and build the pricing and packaging primitives that power both self-serve and enterprise commercial motions. You will shape the entitlement layer that enforces feature access, limits, and credits in a programmable way that keeps product code decoupled from business rules. You will also own the invoice generation workflows and the integrations that connect engineering data to Accounting, Finance, RevOps, Salesforce, CPQ, and ERP systems like NetSuite. This role requires you to operate at the intersection of product, finance, and engineering, ensuring that billing logic is reliable, auditable, and scalable under real-world load. You will partner closely with business stakeholders to translate complex commercial requirements into robust technical designs without compromising system integrity. You will be expected to troubleshoot the hardest billing problems, including invoice discrepancies, usage drift, contract edge cases, and migration failures across distributed systems.

What you'll do

• Partner with Product, Finance, Accounting, RevOps, and Engineering leadership to define and refine Drata's long-term billing architecture and commercial flexibility across self-serve and enterprise motions.
• Design the primitives of a modern billing platform, including usage events, billable metrics, products, rate cards, contracts, credits, subscriptions, overages, and invoice workflows.
• Architect a scalable event-driven system that accurately meters product usage at scale and transforms raw events into billable quantities while supporting rapid pricing changes.
• Build and evolve an entitlement layer that decouples pricing and packaging from product behavior, making feature access, limits, credits, and plan controls programmable rather than hardcoded.
• Collaborate with SFDC administrators, CPQ owners, and Finance systems stakeholders to ensure coherent quote-to-cash flows across CRM, product, billing, ERP, and downstream reporting systems.
• Ensure billing systems are operationally trustworthy by implementing idempotent event handling, strong reconciliation paths, reliable notifications, auditability, and clear observability for both engineers and business teams.
• Review architecture and code for billing-related projects to enforce correctness, scale, security, and maintainability while enabling teams to own implementation details within guardrails.
• Troubleshoot the most complex billing issues, such as invoice discrepancies, usage drift, contract edge cases, entitlement bugs, migration failures, and cross-system inconsistencies.
• Define and own metering logic that supports diverse pricing models, including tiered, volume-based, and threshold-based billing without requiring constant product rework.
• Design and implement robust workflows for usage aggregation, time-window alignment, and quantity calculations that remain accurate across time zones and currency boundaries.
• Create self-service tooling and dashboards that give Finance and RevOps real-time insight into billing health, usage patterns, and revenue leakage.
• Drive backward-compatible evolution of billing data models and APIs so that new products and pricing tiers can be added without disrupting existing customers.
• Establish testing and validation practices for billing logic, including simulation of bill runs, edge-case scenarios, and reconciliation against financial systems.
• Champion operational best practices like idempotency, retry safety, and audit trails to ensure that billing operations remain reliable and explainable at scale.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of delivering complex systems.
• 3+ years of experience designing, building, or operating billing, payments, or monetization platforms in production environments.
• Demonstrated ability to architect and implement event-driven systems that handle high-volume streams of usage data accurately.
• Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend language such as Java, Go, Python, or Node.js, with the capacity to learn additional languages and tools as needed.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems principles, including idempotency, retries, eventual consistency, and observability.
• Experience integrating systems across domains such as CRM, ERP, and billing platforms such as NetSuite or similar financial systems.
• Comfort working with financial data concepts such as invoicing, credits, adjustments, and reconciliation in a B2B context.
• A mindset oriented toward operational excellence, including monitoring, alerting, and runbooks that keep billing systems trustworthy.

Nice to have

• Prior experience with subscription billing, metering, or usage-based pricing models.
• Familiarity with Salesforce CPQ or similar quote-to-cash tooling.
• Experience building systems that support multi-currency and global tax considerations.
• Contributions to open source projects or public-facing technical artifacts related to billing or data platforms.

Practical notes

This role is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and follows a hybrid schedule with mandatory in-office days Tuesday through Thursday. Mondays and Fridays offer flexibility for focused work or personal balance. The position is full-time and eligible for participation in company benefits as defined by Drata policies.
