Staff Software Engineer, Governance
Job description
About the role
You will design and develop the core software that powers Domino's Governance platform, enabling enterprises to manage and control AI workflows at scale. This role centers on building the foundational capabilities that allow data science teams to operate responsibly, securely, and in compliance with enterprise standards. You will own the architecture and implementation of critical features that span backend services, data pipelines, and user-facing controls. You will collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, and infrastructure teams to translate governance requirements into robust, scalable software solutions. Your work will directly influence how organizations build, monitor, and audit AI models in production environments. You will ensure that the platform supports performance, reliability, and extensibility for current and future customer needs. By focusing on high-quality code and thoughtful design, you will help Domino maintain its position as a leader in governed AI development.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and implement backend services that drive the Governance feature set across the Domino platform.
- Extend the open-source foundations of Domino to support new governance capabilities and workflows.
- Translate product requirements into technical designs and clearly communicate these designs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that governance features align with product goals and customer needs.
- Write high-quality, testable code that meets production standards for performance, security, and scalability.
- Participate in code reviews to elevate the overall quality of the codebase and mentor fellow engineers on best practices.
- Optimize system performance and reliability in cloud-native environments using containerization and orchestration tools.
- Work with product managers to refine feature specifications and delivery timelines.
- Ensure that governance workflows are intuitive, consistent, and well-integrated with existing Domino functionality.
- Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap for Governance and related data product initiatives.
- Build monitoring and observability features that provide insight into governance-related system behavior.
- Support the deployment and maintenance of services through CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code practices.
Requirements
- Bring 5+ years of professional experience in backend development with a strong focus on distributed computing technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, and Kafka.
- Demonstrate deep expertise in API design and development, including RESTful services and GraphQL, with an emphasis on integrating frontend and backend systems.
- Show advanced proficiency in at least one of the following languages Java, Scala, Go, or Python, with a proven track record of building high-performance backend solutions.
- Exhibit strong skills in optimizing backend performance and reliability in cloud environments, along with hands-on experience using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Have solid experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation practices that support rapid and reliable software delivery.
- Have built production-grade software systems, preferably using Scala or Go, in environments that demand high throughput and low latency.
- Thrive in fast-paced, dynamic settings where you can solve complex problems and apply a deep understanding of system design and architecture.
- Bring strong familiarity with service-oriented architecture (SOA) and experience designing modular, maintainable services that integrate cleanly across systems.
- Be a reliable and independent team member who can own responsibilities while collaborating effectively with peers and stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Preferred experience with governance, compliance, or data security domains within software platforms.
- Background working with regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, or government environments.
- Familiarity with model lineage, explainability, or auditability concepts in data science workflows.
- Experience contributing to open-source projects that are used in enterprise software stacks.
- Knowledge of data cataloging, metadata management, or data quality tooling.
