Job description
About the role
Become a part of Doctolib's Clinical AI Research Lab, known as Doctolab, where you will be instrumental in creating precise and clinically reliable models that analyze patient health through extensive health data. Your work will not only lay the groundwork for future research but also yield practical applications, with your findings being shared in prestigious publications and implemented in products that support approximately 450,000 healthcare professionals and 90 million patients across Europe. As the lab is in its initial stages, you will have a significant opportunity to influence its research direction and priorities.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Create advanced models that accurately represent patient health, tracking the progression of medical conditions and responses to treatments while addressing confounding factors in observational datasets.
- Establish comprehensive evaluation frameworks to measure model performance in terms of calibration, generalization beyond training data, interpretability, privacy, and reliability.
- Work closely with data science and product teams to convert research insights into practical features that can be utilized in clinical settings.
- Publish your research findings in leading conferences focused on machine learning and health informatics.
- Engage with the wider research community by participating in data challenges, contributing to shared benchmarks, and releasing open-source projects.
- Play a key role in defining the research agenda for the lab and ensuring its alignment with the broader objectives of the organization.
- Mentor junior researchers and contribute to their professional development within the lab.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that research outputs are effectively integrated into product development cycles.
Requirements
- A PhD in machine learning, statistics, computer science, or a closely related field, or a Master's degree accompanied by significant research experience.
- Extensive knowledge in at least one of the following areas: representation learning, self-supervised techniques, large language models, multimodal methodologies, causal inference from observational data, dynamic modeling, calibration and uncertainty quantification, agent-based systems, evaluation and benchmarking, or privacy auditing in machine learning.
- Proven track record of first-author publications in renowned venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, or similar medical informatics conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead research initiatives from conceptualization to publication.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with a deep learning framework such as PyTorch, including hands-on experience with model training.
- Strong capability to manage and analyze large, real-world datasets that may be incomplete or imperfect.
- Excellent communication skills to convey the scientific and practical significance of your research inquiries.
- Fluent in English, as it is the primary working language of the lab.
Nice to have
- Experience with healthcare or medical datasets, clinical text, or electronic health records.
- Background in transitioning research models into production environments or working collaboratively with product teams.
- Contributions to open-source projects, benchmarks, or datasets that enhance the research community.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in Python
- Familiar with PyTorch or similar deep learning frameworks
- Knowledge of Rails, TypeScript, Java, Kotlin, Swift, and React Native (platform stack)
- Experience with cloud-native infrastructure
