About the role
Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there's one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games. The Enterprise Technology org is building a software engineering discipline from the ground up, and this role is the founding engineering hire. You will not be maintaining a status quo or joining an existing backlog; you will define the discipline, set the technical foundation, and build the platform that lets the internal systems enabling Discordians scale with the company.

What you'll do
Manage the device fleet as code by moving device configuration off consoles and into versioned, API-driven infrastructure for endpoint management and hardware provisioning.
Automate the identity layer by managing identity systems and their connections to downstream apps as code, from SSO and SCIM integrations to account workflows, so changes ship through version control and CI/CD instead of an admin console.
Own app delivery and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) by building deployment pipelines and provisioning patterns that let internal systems be built and changed safely, establishing CI/CD standards.
Build the self-service layer by designing and shipping the APIs, CLIs, and portals that compose primitives into paved paths, like a new hire's first day, where software access and group memberships land in one automated, auditable flow.
Set the foundation by defining the technical direction and architecture for the discipline, writing the RFCs and documentation that future hires will build on.
Operate with a platform-as-a-product mindset by constructing reusable primitives, exposing clean APIs, and replacing manual consoles and tickets with a platform people choose to use.
Hide the messy reality of Okta, Jamf, and Terraform behind interfaces that Discordians actually want to interact with, abstracting complexity into reliable, self-service workflows.
Enable internal systems to move as fast as the product itself by treating infrastructure and access as first-class software products rather than manual operations.
Collaborate closely with product and infrastructure teams to ensure the enterprise platform accelerates feature delivery while maintaining security, compliance, and auditability.
Continuously iterate on the platform based on feedback from internal customers, driving adoption through reliability, clear documentation, and thoughtful API design.
Requirements
6+ years building and operating production software and systems at a technology company, with a track record of owning ambiguous projects end to end.
Strong software engineering fundamentals, with the ability to write production code (we lean on Python, TypeScript and Rust), and the discipline to design, test, and ship it. This is not a systems admin role.
Deep, hands-on IAM experience (SSO, SCIM, OAuth/OIDC, RBAC) and fluency with infrastructure as code (Terraform) and CI/CD.
Experience treating endpoint and fleet management as an API-driven engineering surface at scale.
A platform-as-a-product mindset, demonstrated by having built self-service tooling that people chose to adopt.
Comfort with ambiguity and a founder's temperament, energized by building from scratch in a high-growth environment.
Nice to have
Hands-on experience with Okta, Jamf, or Intune.
Experience with identity and access governance for non-human, workload, or AI-agent principals.
Background at a high-growth consumer tech company with a highly technical employee base.

This is a full-time position based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The compensation range listed for US-based roles reflects base salary only and does not include equity or benefits.
US salary range for this role is $248,000 to $279,000 + equity + benefits, with final compensation determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
