Senior Product Designer (Design System)
Job description
About the role
This position serves as the strategic architect and owner of the Disco design system. The role focuses on establishing and evolving system architecture to ensure consistency, scalability, and quality across the product experience. You will lead system initiatives, define component strategy, bridge design and code, and explore how AI can accelerate design system development. While the design system is the core responsibility, you will also contribute to product feature design when team priorities require it, applying systems thinking to complex product challenges. You will bring clarity to system architecture problems, create robust component libraries, and pioneer AI-empowered workflows such as component generation, accessibility auditing, and design-code synchronization. You operate at the intersection of design craft, engineering collaboration, and systems thinking, championing patterns that enable teams to move faster without sacrificing quality.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and evolve system architecture, including component taxonomy, token structure, and governance models. Partner with engineering to align system decisions with technical implementation and long-term scalability, creating frameworks for when to add, modify, or deprecate patterns.
Design production-ready components with comprehensive variant coverage and thoughtful API design. Balance flexibility with consistency, anticipate diverse use cases, and ensure accessibility, performance, and maintainability at scale.
Establish seamless connections between design and code through Code Connect mappings, design token pipelines, and automated synchronization. Ensure design intent translates accurately to implementation while respecting technical constraints.
Pioneer AI workflows that accelerate system work, including component generation, token organization, accessibility auditing, and drift detection. Experiment with emerging paradigms such as AI-readable design systems with structured metadata and semantic annotations, custom design skills and agents for system-specific tasks, and new interaction models between designers, AI, and code. Develop judgment about when AI amplifies work and when human oversight is essential.
Create comprehensive documentation that serves designers, engineers, and AI systems. Develop usage guidelines, component specs, and migration paths. Experiment with machine-readable formats such as semantic metadata and structured specifications to enable AI workflows. Drive adoption through education and continuous improvement.
Collaborate with engineering to ensure implementation matches design vision. Work with product designers to capture emerging patterns and balance local needs with global consistency. Partner with accessibility, QA, and platform teams to maintain quality standards.
Anticipate how decisions ripple across teams and product areas. Consolidate patterns, reduce duplication, and improve coherence. Think in primitives and composition, creating foundational building blocks that enable complexity without bloat.
Maintain a high bar for visual quality, interaction polish, and technical precision. Stay current with emerging technologies such as design tokens, Web Components, and Figma Variables. Experiment with bleeding-edge workflows that reshape how systems are built and adopted.
When team priorities require it, apply systems thinking and design expertise to feature design challenges. Bring architectural perspective and craft excellence to product initiatives while maintaining primary ownership of design system work.
Requirements
Bring at least five years of experience shaping digital interfaces, with two or more years focused on systems, component libraries, or platform design.
Demonstrate a proven track record of building or scaling design systems across multiple product teams.
Show deep proficiency in Figma and its systems capabilities.
Exhibit technical fluency in HTML, CSS, Git, component-based architecture (React, Web Components), and the ability to read code.
Know how to manage contributions, set governance, and handle breaking changes without chaos.
Nice to have
Experience guiding adoption through education, rituals, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Skills and tools
