Staff AI Product Designer, Growth & Discovery, GeminiApp
Job description
About the role
You own the complete design of user experiences for Google's leading AI models, guiding journeys from initial discovery to polished execution. This role requires you to navigate uncertainty and ethical considerations while transforming intricate concepts into clear, intuitive interfaces. You will collaborate with research, product, and engineering teams to shape how billions of people interact with AI, influencing their understanding and actions within intelligent products. You are responsible for defining product strategy for growth and discovery, ensuring that every interaction aligns with the broader vision for user empowerment and model reliability. A significant part of your work involves crafting system prompts and interface rules that dictate how models behave, using prototypes to simulate and refine these experiences before they reach users. You will work at the intersection of design, research, and engineering to ensure that the probabilistic nature of AI outputs is presented in ways that are predictable, controllable, and trustworthy. Your decisions will directly impact how users form mental models of AI capabilities, making clarity and consistency critical to your success. Through this ownership, you will help establish new standards for AI interaction design within the company and across the industry.
Key facts
What you'll do
Defining product strategy for growth and discovery, you will map user flows across web, mobile, and ambient interfaces to identify opportunities for deeper engagement and value realization. You will design high-fidelity user interface concepts, motion sequences, and interaction rules that align with AI behavior and its probabilistic outputs, ensuring consistency across touchpoints. A core part of your work involves crafting system prompts and interface rules to guide model responses, using prototypes to simulate and refine these experiences through iterative testing and validation. You will coordinate with research and engineering to translate model capabilities into concrete design patterns and implementation checkpoints that keep product development on track. You will build and iterate interactive prototypes using tools such as Origami Studio, Principle, and Protopie to validate flows, timing, and responsiveness under real-world conditions. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be central as you prioritize work, align roadmaps, and ensure designs meet user and business objectives without compromising quality or ethical standards. Evaluating early user data and feedback will allow you to refine flows, reduce friction, and improve comprehension across AI-driven features, leading to higher satisfaction and retention. Maintaining a systems perspective, you will optimize how individual components affect the broader AI experience, focusing on clarity, trust, and seamless integration with existing Google services. You will champion design practices rooted in ethics, safety, and accessibility, considering societal context and impact at every stage of the design process. Staying informed about trends in consumer technology, generative AI, and natural language processing will help shape long-term vision and influence product direction at scale.
Requirements
You hold a Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related discipline, providing a foundational understanding of design principles and user-centered thinking. You bring more than seven years of experience designing user interfaces for complex software applications, including specific work on conversational interfaces and interactions for large language models that demand nuanced handling of uncertainty. Your portfolio must demonstrate fluency in visual design, motion design, and interaction design for AI-powered products, with case studies that show your ability to solve complex problems through thoughtful design. It should include examples from leading consumer applications where design directly influenced adoption, engagement, and long-term user loyalty. You design consistently across web, desktop, and mobile platforms, adapting interactions to different device contexts, constraints, and input methods while preserving a coherent experience. Clear communication with engineers and researchers is essential, utilizing prototypes, system instructions, and documented flows to clarify requirements and reduce ambiguity. You are comfortable making decisions in ambiguous environments, balancing creative exploration with practical constraints and business goals. You understand the importance of accessibility and inclusive design, ensuring that your work accommodates diverse users and varying levels of technical familiarity. You are proactive in seeking feedback, iterating based on criticism, and collaborating effectively with cross-functional partners in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
Nice to have
Experience with tools such as Origami Studio, Principle, and Protopie for prototyping AI interactions is valued, as it directly supports rapid experimentation and validation of complex user flows. Familiarity with current research in generative AI, large language models, and human-AI interaction patterns can help you propose designs that are both innovative and grounded in reality. An understanding of how AI models handle context, reasoning, and hallucination is beneficial when designing interfaces that set appropriate user expectations. Experience contributing to open source projects or publishing design insights publicly may demonstrate thought leadership and a commitment to industry advancement. Backgrounds in behavioral psychology, cognitive science, or human factors can provide additional depth when designing for nuanced user behaviors and motivations.
