Sustainability Director

About the role

Crusoe is on the lookout for a visionary leader to spearhead the integration of sustainable practices within our digital infrastructure division. This role involves overseeing environmental performance and corporate sustainability initiatives, collaborating closely with our engineering, real estate, and construction teams to ensure that our operations align with our sustainability goals.

What you'll do

• Lead the establishment and application of sustainable design standards for data center projects, guiding them from the initial planning stages through to completion.
• Monitor and enhance key infrastructure performance metrics, including Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), and Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE).
• Conduct thorough due diligence for new site developments, focusing on permitting processes and assessing environmental impacts.
• Assess and implement innovative efficiency technologies, such as artificial intelligence-driven energy management systems, water recycling solutions, and grid interactivity enhancements.
• Develop and execute strategies aimed at measuring and minimizing embodied carbon, including the promotion of low-carbon building materials.
• Facilitate lifecycle assessments and assist in the company's reporting of Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions.
• Foster relationships with external stakeholders, including investors, regulatory bodies, and certification organizations, to promote our sustainability initiatives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that sustainability considerations are integrated into all aspects of project development and execution.
• Prepare and deliver presentations on sustainability initiatives to both technical and executive audiences, translating complex environmental data into actionable insights.
• Stay updated on industry trends and regulatory changes related to sustainability and environmental management, ensuring that Crusoe remains a leader in sustainable practices.
• Mentor and guide junior team members in sustainability best practices and project management.

Requirements

• A minimum of 8 to 12 years of professional experience in sustainability, environmental management, or ESG strategy.
• Proven background in data centers, cloud infrastructure, or the energy sector, with a strong understanding of industry-specific challenges.
• Technical expertise in greenhouse gas accounting, lifecycle assessments, and green building certification processes.
• Strong ability to communicate complex environmental data effectively to both technical teams and executive leadership.
• Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously across various locations, demonstrating strong organizational skills.
• Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time to visit project sites and offices as needed.

Nice to have

• Professional certifications such as LEED Accredited Professional, ISSP Sustainability Associate, or Certified Energy Manager are advantageous.
• Familiarity with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, EPA ENERGY STAR for Data Centers, or frameworks established by The Green Grid.
• Experience in renewable energy procurement, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and carbon offset strategies.
• Understanding of circular economy principles, particularly as they relate to IT hardware and the reduction of electronic waste.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in sustainability reporting frameworks such as GRI, SASB, CDP, and TCFD.
• Knowledgeable about data center operational metrics, including PUE, WUE, and CUE.
• Familiar with green building frameworks like LEED and Green Globes.
• Experienced in carbon assessment methodologies and tools used for sustainability reporting.
