About the role
Commure is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our team in Rio de Janeiro, where you will play a pivotal role in developing and enhancing AI-driven email agents tailored for healthcare revenue cycle management (RCM). This position offers the opportunity to take full ownership of systems that automate intricate email workflows, guiding projects from conceptualization to live deployment. What you'll do
- Design, implement, and maintain AI agents that handle high-volume email processes within the RCM domain.
- Develop frameworks for agents that facilitate tool utilization, structured workflows, context management, human escalation, and dependable execution.
- Create scalable backend services and APIs utilizing Python and FastAPI to support agent functionality.
- Build user-friendly interfaces using React and JavaScript, enabling operations teams to effectively manage agent activities.
- Design and implement PostgreSQL schemas and data pipelines to ensure workflow state management, auditability, analytics, and performance tracking of agents.
- Integrate AI agents with various email systems, internal Commure services, healthcare workflows, and external platforms to enhance functionality.
- Establish evaluation frameworks to assess agent performance metrics such as accuracy, resolution rates, escalation rates, latency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Implement monitoring, alerting, reporting, and safety measures for critical workflows managed by agents.
- Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and work to improve system reliability and performance.
- Collaborate closely with RCM operators and customers to gain insights into workflows and drive product enhancements.
- Lead projects from initial problem identification through to implementation, deployment, and measurable impact in production.
- Contribute to the evolution of the engineering culture as the team in Rio de Janeiro grows and develops.
Requirements
- Proven experience in building and managing production software systems.
- Proficiency in Python, particularly in developing APIs and services using FastAPI.
- Strong full-stack development capabilities, especially with modern applications using React and JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Experience in designing data models and production systems utilizing PostgreSQL.
- Familiarity with large language models (LLMs), AI agents, or agent harnesses, including aspects like tool invocation, orchestration, context management, evaluations, retries, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
- Solid understanding of production engineering principles, including testing, observability, alerting, incident response, and ensuring system reliability.
- Experience with containerization and cloud infrastructure, particularly using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Ability to work efficiently while upholding high standards for accuracy, maintainability, and user experience.
- Strong product judgment with a knack for simplifying complex operational workflows.
- Excellent ownership and communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A proactive builder mindset, driven by a passion for applying AI to solve significant challenges in healthcare.
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
- Experience in developing email agents, support automation, workflow engines, or other systems for asynchronous processing.
- Background in creating evaluation systems for products powered by LLMs.
- Familiarity with revenue cycle management, healthcare billing, claims processing, remittance, or practice management workflows.
- Experience in building systems that require strong auditability, security, and data privacy measures.
- Experience managing high-volume distributed systems that utilize queues, background workers, and third-party integrations.
