About the role
In this position, you will be an integral part of the Compliance Technology team, which is dedicated to building and maintaining the data infrastructure necessary for meeting global regulatory requirements. Your primary focus will be on developing systems and detection mechanisms that enable the organization to effectively handle its Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) responsibilities. This role is in ensuring that Coinbase adheres to compliance standards while leveraging technology to enhance operational efficiency.

What you'll do
- Design and oversee the development of data models related to entities, transactions, cases, and risk features to enhance Know Your Customer (KYC), screening, and transaction monitoring processes.
- Establish and maintain data integrity by implementing lineage tracking, validation protocols, and comprehensive documentation to ensure readiness for audits.
- Work closely with engineering and compliance teams to standardize data instrumentation and address any upstream data discrepancies.
- Analyze detection signals to refine them, aiming to reduce false positives while ensuring the system remains sensitive to genuine risks.
- Develop reporting frameworks that evaluate the effectiveness of controls and provide actionable insights for both auditors and operational teams.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to manage projects that may involve ambiguity and require a nuanced understanding of regulated environments.
- generative AI responsibly to enhance workflow efficiency and improve the quality of outputs.
- Participate in regular team meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and strategies for continuous improvement in compliance technology initiatives.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience in data engineering or analytics engineering, demonstrating a solid track record in the field.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, including skills in performance tuning and executing complex data transformations.
- Experience with managing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) or ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) pipelines and data models, utilizing tools such as Airflow or dbt.
- Proficient in Python for tasks related to data analysis, pipeline development, and automation processes.
- Proven ability to handle ambiguous, cross-functional projects, particularly within regulated industries, showcasing strong problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with the responsible use of generative AI technologies to enhance productivity and output quality.
Nice to have
- Experience in the cryptocurrency or fintech sectors, providing insight into industry-specific compliance challenges.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements related to BSA and AML.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools to present findings and insights effectively.
- Understanding of machine learning concepts and their application in compliance technology.

Practical notes
- The annual base salary for this position ranges from $167,280 to $196,800 USD.
- Total compensation includes equity options, eligibility for bonuses, and a comprehensive benefits package that covers medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plans.
- Coinbase operates as a remote-first organization, requiring employees to participate in quarterly in-person working sessions, referred to as surges.
