About the role
This position centers on directing a specialized team of Solutions Engineers who concentrate on commercial client engagements within the enterprise segment. The appointed manager will exercise leadership over technical pre-sales initiatives that span the entire sales lifecycle for complex deals. They will be responsible for articulating the strategic value of Cloudflare's integrated platform to prospective and existing organizations. Success in this role requires close collaboration with internal sales and customer success functions to ensure alignment on customer objectives. The individual will mentor direct reports while simultaneously elevating the technical quality of customer interactions. They will drive the adoption of standardized technical sales practices and contribute to the maturation of the Solutions Engineering organization. This role demands the translation of intricate technical capabilities into compelling narratives for executive stakeholders. The manager will also validate the feasibility and impact of solutions during proof-of-concept phases to de-risk the sales process.

What you'll do
- Orchestrate the end-to-end technical engagement strategy for commercial accounts, ensuring that live demonstrations and proof-of-concept exercises validate the proposed architecture.
- Develop and coach a team of Solutions Engineers, instilling a methodologyical approach to problem-solving and client communication.
- Liaise with sales leadership and customer success managers to dissect client requirements and map them to appropriate Cloudflare products and features.
- Architect and refine the technical sales playbooks, introducing new best practices that enhance the efficiency of the Solutions Engineering function.
- Synthesize highly technical elements of Cloudflare's infrastructure into clear, audience-specific narratives that resonate with both technical implementers and business decision-makers.
- Evaluate complex customer environments to determine the optimal deployment models and integration pathways for Cloudflare's security and performance stack.
- Oversee the execution of technical validation activities, such as architecture reviews and security assessments, to support advanced stages of the sales cycle.
- Utilize data and feedback from customer engagements to identify gaps in current capabilities and advocate for product or process improvements.
- Represent Cloudflare in cross-functional discussions, ensuring that technical constraints and opportunities are considered in commercial decisions.
- Manage the technical aspects of competitive displacement deals, devising strategies to highlight the distinct advantages of the Cloudflare platform.
- Monitor the progression of sales opportunities, providing technical risk assessments and mitigation plans to increase conversion rates.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning within the team, ensuring that Solutions Engineers remain current on emerging threats and infrastructure trends.
- Partner with product management to relay real-world customer feedback, influencing the roadmap for new feature development and enhancements.
- Ensure all technical proposals adhere to the company's security and compliance standards, particularly regarding data protection and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or possess equivalent practical experience that demonstrates the necessary technical acumen.
- Accumulate a minimum of 8 years of professional experience focused on internet technologies, cloud technologies, or closely related disciplines that involve infrastructure and network operations.
- Accumulate at least 3 years of experience leading teams of Solutions Engineers or managing parallel technical roles that involve pre-sales or advisory functions.
- Demonstrate a proven record of managing complex sales cycles from discovery through to implementation, including the identification and execution of technical validation activities.
- Show evidence of implementing operational and organizational best practices across multiple departments, improving efficiency and alignment.
- Exhibit strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to deconstruct complex systems and diagnose root causes.
- Maintain excellent communication and presentation skills, with a proven ability to engage effectively with stakeholders ranging from technical engineers to C-suite executives.
- Possess experience with established sales methodologies such as MEDDPICC or BANT, applying these frameworks to structure technical engagements.
- Have hands-on experience with internet protocols, routing, and network security concepts to credibly discuss architecture with technical audiences.
- Show familiarity with cloud infrastructure models, including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS, and the associated security shared responsibility models.
- Demonstrate experience in a consultative selling environment where relationship building and trust are critical to success.
- Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear documentation and executive summaries.
- Be comfortable working within a fast-paced, matrixed organization that requires adaptability and strong time management.

Practical notes
- Compensation for this role in Los Angeles is estimated between $202,000 and $278,000 annually.
- This position is eligible for Cloudflare's equity plan.
