About the role

Checkr is on the lookout for a Senior Staff Software Engineer who will play a pivotal role in defining the architecture of our essential systems while spearheading significant initiatives that span multiple departments. This role involves leading the platform's global expansion and contributing to the development of an Enterprise Architecture. You will collaborate closely with the entire Research and Development team to grasp domain models and customer requirements, ensuring that our product is API-first and capable of scaling effectively.

• Identify and prioritize the most impactful opportunities within the engineering organization to drive innovation and efficiency.
• Take ownership of the direction and execution of significant technical initiatives that affect the entire company.
• Engage in hands-on coding in areas that present substantial business risks, ensuring quality and reliability.
• Break down complex projects into manageable systems that can be developed by less experienced engineers, fostering a collaborative environment.
• Create and maintain documentation that sets architectural standards for the engineering team, promoting consistency and best practices.
• Mentor and support Staff Engineers, enhancing the overall quality and scalability of engineering efforts across the organization.
• Provide guidance on whether to build or buy solutions, aligning decisions with the broader business strategy.
• Act as a representative for the engineering team in leadership discussions, demonstrating a thorough understanding of customer, partner, and product team needs.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or a related discipline is required.
• At least 15 years of experience in software engineering, showcasing a deep understanding of the field.
• A minimum of 5 years in a leadership capacity, demonstrating the ability to guide teams effectively.
• Over 2 years of experience leading architectural projects across the organization, showcasing strategic thinking.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Ruby, GoLang, and Python is essential.
• Strong grasp of cloud technologies and the various layers of backend stacks is necessary.
• Extensive knowledge of microservices architecture and asynchronous queueing patterns is required.
• Proven experience in designing and managing real-time and batch data pipelines that handle billions of data points.
• A history of mentoring engineering and product teams in domain-driven design principles is highly valued.
• Ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and innovation.
• Excellent communication, project management, and collaboration skills are crucial.
• A strong sense of ownership and a desire to continuously learn and improve are essential traits.

Nice to have

• Experience with container orchestration tools, such as Kubernetes or Docker.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Knowledge of data privacy regulations and compliance standards.
• Experience in working with distributed systems and cloud-native applications.
