Electrical Design Engineer

About the role

CERN is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join its Electrical Design and Documentation Office (EN-EL-DDO). In this position, you will collaborate with senior design managers on various strategic projects, such as the electrical consolidation of the North Area and the renovation of outdated medium-voltage protection relays in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This role offers the opportunity to engage in the design of low voltage distribution networks and progressively tackle more complex projects under the mentorship of experienced professionals.

What you'll do

• Conduct short-circuit calculations to assess the performance and safety of electrical systems.
• Perform protection coordination and selectivity studies to ensure the reliability of electrical distribution.
• Design electrical power distribution systems and circuits tailored to specific project requirements.
• Prepare detailed calculation reports, lighting studies, and earthing studies to support design decisions.
• Create electrical design drawings, including single-line diagrams, to communicate design intent clearly.
• Develop bills of materials for electrical equipment and installations to facilitate procurement and project execution.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate electrical designs with other engineering disciplines.
• Participate in site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
• Assist in the renovation of existing electrical systems, focusing on improving performance and safety.
• Engage in continuous learning and professional development through on-the-job training and formal courses.
• Contribute to the documentation and reporting of project progress and outcomes to stakeholders.
• Support the implementation of innovative solutions to enhance electrical system efficiency and reliability.

Requirements

• A degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, with a Master's degree and 2 to 6 years of relevant experience or a PhD with up to 3 years of experience.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in designing low voltage distribution networks, including LV calculation notes and equipment sizing.
• Proven ability to perform short circuit calculations and selectivity studies effectively.
• Familiarity with lighting system design for both indoor and outdoor environments, preferably using DIALux software.
• Experience with secondary design tools such as E-PLAN or similar applications is advantageous.
• Knowledge of medium voltage distribution networks is a plus.
• Proficiency in using low voltage design calculation tools like ElecCalc or Caneco.
• Strong understanding of LV standards, protection mechanisms, and various earthing systems.
• Excellent spoken and written English skills, with a willingness to learn French.
• Must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Nice to have

• Experience in project management or coordination within engineering environments.
• Familiarity with safety regulations and standards applicable to electrical engineering.
• Previous involvement in large-scale engineering projects, particularly in research or industrial settings.

• Proficient in AutoCAD or similar design software for creating electrical schematics and layouts.
• Strong analytical skills for problem-solving and decision-making in engineering contexts.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Effective communication skills to convey technical information to diverse audiences.

Practical notes

• This position requires working in radiation areas and performing interventions in underground installations.
• A valid driving license is necessary for site visits and inspections.
• The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 36 months.
• The target start date for this role is September 1, 2026.
