About the role
Carbon60 is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to join their team in a full-time capacity. This role involves working closely with clients and internal teams to deliver technical solutions in real-world environments. Candidates should be comfortable with hands-on technical work and communicating complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The position requires a proactive mindset and a willingness to take ownership of systems from deployment through ongoing maintenance.

What you'll do
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and translate them into actionable technical implementations
- Deploy and configure software solutions at client locations or in production environments on schedule
- Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues as they arise in live production environments
- Write and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for all deployed systems and supporting processes
- Conduct on-site or remote support for customers running Carbon60 solutions in their environments
- Coordinate with development teams to escalate bugs and feature requests gathered from production usage
- Perform system upgrades and patches regularly to ensure deployed infrastructure remains current and secure
- Gather feedback from end users and relay actionable insights back to the engineering organization
- Assist in the planning and execution of deployment schedules across multiple client accounts simultaneously
- Ensure that all deployed systems meet operational standards and organizational compliance requirements consistently
- Participate in post-incident reviews and contribute to improving deployment processes based on lessons learned from production events
- Support the onboarding of new client environments by preparing infrastructure, configuring access, and validating system readiness before go-live
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline is required
- Strong understanding of software deployment processes and production environment management practices is essential
- Ability to travel to client sites as needed for on-site support and installation work
- Experience with scripting and automation tools to streamline deployment workflows and reduce manual effort
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with clients and internal team members
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while remaining aligned with team objectives and shared goals
- Familiarity with version control systems and collaborative development practices across distributed engineering teams
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and demands
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks to support reliable and repeatable deployment workflows
- Knowledge of security best practices including access control, encryption, and vulnerability management for production systems
- Proficiency with Linux system administration including process management, file permissions, and service configuration
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose issues under pressure in time-sensitive situations
Nice to have
- Prior experience working in a forward-deployed or field engineering capacity at a technology company
- Knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms such as Docker or Kubernetes is beneficial
- Exposure to cloud infrastructure providers including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
- Background in customer-facing technical roles with direct responsibility for system reliability, uptime, and incident response
- Understanding of infrastructure-as-code principles and tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation for managing cloud resources
Skills & tools
- Scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation and configuration tasks
- Linux operating systems and command-line administration for managing deployed servers and services
- Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, and firewall configuration for production environments
- Configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef for infrastructure automation
- Monitoring and observability platforms for tracking system health and performance in production
- Container technologies and orchestration frameworks for managing and scaling deployed workloads
- Log aggregation and analysis tools such as the ELK stack or Splunk for production debugging
- Agile project management methodologies and familiarity with issue tracking platforms like Jira or Linear
Practical notes
- This is a full-time position with standard business hours, though on-call rotation may be required for production support
